Hoopheads, we have another Wembanyama on the block. While Victor continues to redefine what’s possible in the NBA, his younger brother Oscar is quietly leveling up back home in France. He was earlier projected to go 24th during a mock draft. As one would expect, he’s naturally drawn to basketball, following in his siblings’ footsteps. Oscar was also present to support his older brother at the 2023 draft. His growth and physique already reflect his readiness to follow in his brother’s footsteps. And if you are curious, yes, he is tall.

The NBA has had sibling duos in the past. Sometimes, even on the same team, take the Antetokounmpos, for example. With Alex’s signing, all three brothers are at the Bucks.
We’ve seen Victor do his magic, and we’d surely want to see what Oscar has in store, but that’ll take time. Oscar is not eligible for the NBA Draft until 2026. He still has a minimum of a year to grow and hone his individuality and skills, something that his parents have instilled in him.

Who are Oscar Wembanyama’s parents?
Oscar Wembanyama’s father is Félix Wembanyama. He is a former Congolese track and field athlete who specialized in the high jump. He has helped his children develop strong athletic foundations, as was evident with Victor. While their father sure was athletic, it was actually their mother who passed down the love for the sport to the children. Élodie de Fautereau is a former professional basketball player. She also coaches youngsters in France.
They raised their kids in Le Chesnay, France, just outside Paris. Oscar grew up in an environment where sports were a central part of daily life. Together, Felix and Élodie provided Oscar the perfect environment to pursue his own path in basketball.

Who are Oscar Wembanyama’s siblings?
There is no doubt that Victor is an exceptional athlete. However, the brothers have another older sibling whose journey essentially served as a blueprint for them. Their older sister, Eve Wembanyama, is a professional basketball player who has competed for teams such as LDLC ASVEL in Lyon in the EuroLeague Women. She was born in 2001 and peaked early, representing France in the FIBA U16 in 2017 and the U20 Women’s European Championships in 2021.
From the start of his basketball journey, Oscar looked up to his siblings’ accomplishments. “My sister and my brother were both French champions, and that was my goal from the start of the season, even though I was just starting basketball,” he told Euroleague Basketball.

Oscar also spoke about how underrated his sister really is, saying, “There is too little talk about my sister, I watch all of her games, and there are things that inspire me about her, especially the intensity that she puts on the floor. She is incredible.”
Anyone who grew up with siblings knows this: getting compared with your siblings is inevitable. And it does not matter if you come from an athletic family; they still do it. Oscar faced it too. But he is focused on creating his own path. “My big brother taught me a lot of things, and he fulfilled his role as a big brother very well for me,” the youngest Wembanyama shared.
“He (Victor) knows how to manage all the attention he has on him very well. I don’t particularly feel in his shadow. My goal is not to do exactly like him but to write my own story, as beautiful as possible. The only pressure I receive is from others who give it to me, from constantly being compared to [Victor], and all the questions I am asked about him. People sometimes see me only as Victor’s brother, and that’s not the case,” Oscar said. He knows what will be expected of him the moment he steps into the NBA. But more on that later, for now, he is just a kid who carries a multicultural identity.
What is Oscar Wembanyama’s ethnicity and nationality?
Oscar Wembanyama is a blend of Congolese and French heritage. His father, Félix, is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. His mother is French by ethnicity. They are all French citizens. In fact, it was in France that Victor started playing basketball at the age of 7. For Oscar, it all starts here.
How did Oscar Wembanyama start his basketball journey?
Oscar grew up watching his siblings own the floor. But his basketball journey had a rather strange and humble beginning. It all began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the young athlete shifted his focus from handball to basketball. Spending more time watching the sport sparked his interest.
“In my city, all my friends did it. That’s what made me appreciate the sport. I think I was considered a prospect, you could say. I played very little basketball, just with my mother because she organized training courses for children. I got into it in a club last year. I had been considering doing it for a year,” Oscar earlier said.
“There was a period when I was not doing anything because of COVID, and that emptiness pushed me to do something new, so I turned to basketball,” he shared with EuroLeague. It was a productive way to spend the lockdown, and even better if all the hard work paid off. It certainly did!
Oscar joined Nanterre 92 at the age of 14. This is the same club where his brother, Victor, previously played. His addition was impactful as the team went on to win the French U15 title. He experienced his first taste of success, which set the foundation for his future progress.

By 2022, Oscar advanced to LDLC ASVEL’s U18 team, one of France’s top youth basketball programs. Playing for ASVEL offered him a platform to refine his game, face stronger competition, and learn from experienced coaches in a professional environment.
At 16, Oscar began the season with Espoirs ASVEL, participating in both the LNB Espoirs league and international tournaments in Dubai. In the following season, Oscar transferred to Espoirs Strasbourg. Across five games, he played an average of 10.6 minutes per game, contributing 2.2 points, one rebound, and 1.6 assists per game. Now in the 2025-26 season, Oscar is continuing with Espoirs Strasbourg as a forward.
For someone who played “very little basketball” in his own words, the growth trajectory has only gone upwards in the last few years. We’re confident Oscar will follow in Victor’s footsteps and make his way to the pros in the NBA!
