But in August 2000, Miller filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. He had signed a new three-year, $36-million deal with the Indiana Pacers just a day after filing—a timing that Stavrou’s lawyers challenged as an attempt to limit her payout. Miller’s team pointed to a $5-million payment already made and a prenup that funneled 5% of his income into a trust for her. After negotiations, their divorce was finalized on April 3, 2001. It was far from amicable, but it paved the path for Miller to remarry in 2003 and for Marita to build her design empire.
