Who is Bob Myers, and what was his role at ESPN?

Bob Myers is a well-known figure in the NBA front office, particularly recognized for his significant tenure with the Golden State Warriors. However, his career in sports began long before that. After his college basketball career at UCLA, Myers started as a sports agent intern. He quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the top assistants at Tellem and Associates. When the firm transitioned to SFX Sports in 2000, Myers was promoted to vice president.

Throughout his career, he negotiated numerous contracts and spent the last five years of his fourteen-year tenure at Wasserman Media Group before transitioning into sports management. His time with the Warriors was where he truly gained prominence. When Myers took over, the franchise had only made one playoff appearance in 18 years. Under his leadership, the team achieved seven consecutive playoff appearances from 2013 to 2019, along with several major accolades.

After over a decade of success in the Bay Area, Bob Myers decided to join ESPN as a basketball analyst in 2023. At the sports network, the 50-year-old participated in the pregame and postgame basketball shows. Simultaneously, he served as an advisor to Josh Harris, assisting with the development of the organizational infrastructure for the Washington Commanders. It’s safe to say that this brief role in 2024 helped him secure his latest position. However, what motivated him to leave ESPN?

Why did Bob Myers decide to leave ESPN?

Bob Myers joined ESPN shortly after ending his tenure with the Warriors, suggesting that the long-time NBA executive was eager to explore new opportunities. While we can’t know his exact motivations, this scenario seems the most plausible. At ESPN, Myers shared his basketball expertise with millions over the past few years. However, those familiar with him know that he thrives on new challenges, which likely motivated his recent decision to leave ESPN and join Harris-Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.

Upon joining the group, where Myers is all set to work full-time with a goal of expanding and bolstering the HBSE portfolio that includes several NBA, NHL, and Premier League teams, he revealed the real reason why he decided to leave his basketball analyst role at ESPN. “I have been fortunate to know Josh and David for a long time, and I’ve always greatly admired them and respected how they’ve built such an impressive global sports portfolio,” he said.

This role was intriguing because it provides the opportunity to work with some of the industry’s most talented leaders and executives across the world’s biggest sports leagues. By leveraging HBSE’s global presence in sports, we can create competitive advantages for our athletes and teams that enhance our ability to win. This is the type of challenge and opportunity I was looking for, and I’m grateful to Josh and David for the chance to be a part of HBSE.

He also gave a shoutout to his ESPN colleagues: “I also want to thank Bob Iger, Jimmy Pitaro, and my colleagues at ESPN for an incredible experience during my time there and for their support as I pursue the next chapter of my career.” By the looks of it, despite having a great experience at ESPN, this opportunity to work for HBSE was something he had been looking for a while and was just too good to pass on. That’s why he immediately decided to join the project. However, the question is which teams will he be managing?

Which teams will Bob Myers oversee at HBSE?

Since last year, there were speculations that Bob Myers might make his much-awaited return to the NBA front Office. Although that did not turn out to be true, his role as an advisor for HBSE for the Washington Commanders led him to work closely with the sports group and also with the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, he’ll work even closer with the ownership group and oversee a diverse portfolio ranging from basketball to ice hockey to soccer. Also, across five different leagues, including the NBA, of course.

This should clear the air around the teams Myers is going to manage. But does this mean he’ll be in each team’s front office? Well, no. It has been made clear that the managing team’s acquisition of Myers will not impact any of the teams’ organizational structures. So, he won’t be replacing Daryl Morey at the Sixers, at least not now. Nonetheless, his hiring has added a whole new level of reputation and experience to the HSBE Group, and Josh Harris and David Blitzer recognized the same through their statement.

Our goal has been to hire, grow, and retain the best and brightest executives in the world, and we are a stronger, more dynamic organization with the addition of Bob Myers,” they said. “His experience as an architect of championship teams will complement our existing leadership structure, while also allowing HBSE to maximize opportunities across our portfolio. We’re excited to have Bob continue his storied career here at HBSE.” So, it will be interesting to see how this new chapter turns out for Bob Myers.

Bob Myers’ Career highlights and achievements

As we’ve already mentioned, Bob Myers has been incredibly successful in his executive career so far. While most of it has been because of an exceptional work ethic and staggering skill-identifying abilities, there’s a reason he was called the ‘Forrest Gump‘ of the team back in UCLA. This was the nickname given to him by his teammates due to his apparent good fortune. Well, he did enter the Bruins team as a walk-on, secured a full scholarship, won a national championship– all while averaging just 0.3 points.

So, it’s safe to say he did have luck on his side after all. However, unlike his basketball abilities, his management skills cannot be doubted. His list of accomplishments with the Golden State Warriors includes four NBA championships (2015, 2017,2018, and 2022) and two Executive of the Year honors (2015 and 2017). Now Bob Myers enters a whole chapter of his executive career with HSBE. So, it will be worth watching what new honors the former GM adds to his resume in the coming years.
