Is Joel Embiid betraying Team USA by considering playing for Cameroon in the LA Olympics?

As Joel Embiid turned up to represent Team USA in the Olympics, the French fans considered it a betrayal. But was it a betrayal? Well, to a certain point, it was. Embiid had reportedly sent a letter to the French president, talking about his aspiration to play for the French national team, but he didn’t pursue it, which was why the French crowd booed the Sixers star whenever he touched the ball at the Olympics.

However, at the end of the day, Embiid has an Olympic gold which he earned with one of the greatest Team USA rosters ever assembled. Will he be back playing for the USA in the Summer of ’28 though? Well, Embiid has now hinted at the possibility of representing Cameroon in the next Summer Olympics. Yes, the Process might represent his home country (if Cameroon qualifies) in LA.

The ESPN analyst Tim McMahon is quite optimistic about Embiid’s participation in the Olympics in the Cameroon jersey. “I wish he would do it. I wish him and Siakam would play,” said MacMahon. It would be a pretty interesting duo to look forward to, if Embiid and Siakam are to team up in the future.

Embiid and Siakam clashed back in 2019 when the Raptors narrowly escaped the Sixers in the second round. They both have incredible potential and should look to help Cameroon qualify for the Olympics. The Cameroonian national team came up short in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Latvia. However, their best win was against Brazil, after which they qualified for the Semis. The local talent leveled to the Brazilians. If Embiid and Pascal Siakam play together, Cameroon would have greater chances of qualifying for the Olympics.

But Embiid’s eligibility to play for Cameroon is also something to keep an eye on. According to FIBA, the player must have a valid passport  (in this case, a Cameroonian passport which Joel already holds) and must not have represented the previous country in the last three years. It means that Embiid should not participate in any FIBA tournaments until the next Olympics if he wishes to represent his home country in LA.

Embiid is one of the best players in the world. If he wants, he can also look to play for France, as he promised to the French president previously. But will the French fans welcome him now?

It would be tough for Joel Embiid to play for France in the future

What’s your perspective on:

Is Joel Embiid betraying Team USA by considering playing for Cameroon in the LA Olympics?

Have an interesting take?

Countries like the States, France, Serbia, Canada, and Germany are the top squads in international basketball. If Joel Embiid decides to play for France, it would only strengthen their squad and help them in their quest for an Olympic gold. But then again, after what happened in Paris, it is tough to say whether the French national team would consider allowing Embiid on the roster. Not only did he drive the French fans upset, as seen by their continued boos in the games, but he also didn’t keep his promise to the French president.

On the flip side, it would be great to see Embiid play with his fellow Cameroonians, who have some serious potential to play in the Olympics. Are they better than the Sudanese? Well, they are not very far off. It would be safe to say that with guys like Embiid and Siakam, the Cameroonian national team is likely to dominate the next OQT.

Whether Embiid decides to abandon Team USA in the next Olympics remains to be seen, but before that, the Sixer will look to enjoy his time in the NBA, playing alongside his new teammate, Paul George.

What are your thoughts on Embiid possibly playing for Cameroon in the next Olympics? Do you think he should continue to represent the States? Let us know in the comments.
