The Fates had a cruel laugh at the fan-voted USA vs. World All-Star showdown, scrambling the lineup with a wave of injuries. Fans are grudgingly adjusting to missing their voted favorites, but no one’s anxiety burns hotter than for the poll-topping superstar, Luka Doncic. He has battled through pain, dodged a controversial court scare in Cleveland, and endured scrape after scrape en route to All-Star Weekend. Now, his new Lakers squad is pulling out all the stops to shield their MVP-caliber prize.

The status of the Lakers superstar for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game remains shrouded in mystery following a series of curt, repetitive responses from head coach JJ Redick. Despite Luka Doncic being the league’s top overall vote-getter, his availability for Sunday’s midsummer classic in San Francisco is under intense scrutiny due to a lingering injury scare.

When pressed on whether the face of the franchise would be cleared to represent the Lakers on the global stage, Redick offered a defiant, stone-walled statement that has left fans and media alike questioning who is truly making the call.

During a pre-game media availability, Redick was asked if it was still possible for Luka to suit up this weekend. “That’s above my pay grade,” Redick replied sharply.

During the February 5 game against the 76ers, Doncic abruptly left the court in the second half from a non-contact hamstring injury. It seemed to be the clincher in a series of bad luck and near scares the 26-year-old had so far. The only comfort was that it wasn’t a very serious injury.

However, in the days since, updates on his recovery have been frustratingly sparse. At this point, there’s little clarity about what is Doncic’s progress in the training room. When Redick was asked follow-up questions about what milestones the Lakers’ medical staff needed to see from Luka to feel comfortable with his participation, Redick doubled down with the exact same five words: “That’s above my pay grade.”

This repeated refusal to elaborate has done more than leave fans in the dark – it’s raised serious questions about what’s happening behind closed doors. The exchange has sparked a firestorm of speculation regarding a potential rift or a safety-first mandate from the Lakers’ front office.

Redick’s uncharacteristic lack of transparency suggests that the decision-making process has been elevated to the highest levels of the Lakers organization when it comes to the face of the franchise.

Luka Doncic’s got a different idea

It may be the effect of Damian Lillard defying medical expectations to compete for a third 3-point Contest title despite his torn Achilles. Contrary to what the medical and coaching staff might want, Luka Doncic is not postponing his comeback until after the All-Star Break.

While Redick is keeping his cards close to his chest, reports from the inner circle of “Luka Magic” suggest a much more optimistic tone. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon revealed that the player himself is desperate to participate.

By Luka’s assessment, MacMahon says, that he is “Progressing well, hoping he can play in the All-Star game.” The NBA insider also said that Doncic “Appreciates being the top vote getter. Wants to be on the floor on Sunday.”

It seems that Doncic feels the need to reciprocate the love by giving back the 3.4 million votes he received. But Redick and the Lakers also need to prioritize their real championship contention in the young star. While the fans want to see the leading vote-getter shine in the 75th Anniversary game, the Lakers’ medical staff is reportedly wary of any unnecessary aggravations before the season’s final push.

For now, we still have to wait for official word from a pay grade higher than JJ Redick’s $8 million pay grade.
