The Golden State Warriors pay the highest luxury tax. That is the price maintenance of four rings. You can’t be frugal when it comes to winning. However, there is a limit to the spending as stipulated by the cap space. The limit comes in the wake of multiple heavyweight contracts. Firstly, Stephen Curry’s contract is north of $50 million per year. Apart from that, Draymond Green signed a deal that is over $20 million per year. Andrew Wiggins is making around that much money, in fact, even more.

While Chris Paul’s contract is a hefty $30 million per year, the deal ends after the current season. This leaves one of the biggest steam engines of the team; Klay Thompson. Are the Warriors in a position to keep him?

The Klay Thompson situation

Thompson is in the last year of his five-year $189 million deal. This season he is going to receive around $43 million. This current deal suggests how highly Thompson is rated and what was his asking price before he turned 30. Now that is going to be 34 soon, there may be skepticism about his value being that high. 

But hold on to that thought, this is a hooper who hit the most total threes last season.  His production remains the same and although his defense may not be the same, his skillsets are a hot commodity in the market. Therefore, he does command a similar value, if not more considering the current market.

There were murmurs of a four-year $140 million extension floating around but perhaps, both parties are uninterested in that. However, as per Spotrac, the Warriors can’t offer a deal that pays him even $30 million annually for four straight seasons. He can have a year in the contract where he gets paid this much, but the Warriors are in no shape to offer him a contract that justifies his current valuation. So, that makes one wonder, will this be his last year with the Dubs?

Will this be his Last Dance with Stephen Curry?

The phrase Last Dance is associated with MJ’s game-winner to win the title and his last season with the Bulls when he won their third in a row. Therefore, The Last Dance also implies high hopes. The Warriors are perennial contenders, so a fifth championship isn’t out of the question. Considering all their key players are in their prime, they can be in for another brilliant run.

Apart from all these factors, there is a big likelihood of Klay returning. To finish with the Warriors is certainly a prolific allure. He knows the city, he knows the organization, and considering off-the-court endorsements and the ANTA deal especially, he may consider signing for less.
