Billionaire businessman Mark Cuban is a fan favorite in the league and for good reason. Unlike many other team owners, the Dallas Mavericks owner is very active with his team and is quite vocal as well. Ever supportive of his players, Cuban recently had a major hand in changing the life of former Mavericks star, Dorian Finney-Smith. He played with Luka Doncic and the Mavs before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving.

Finney-Smith’s father was wrongly convicted of second-degree murder in 1995. 28 years after this incident, his father can finally return home, and the Nets star has Mark Cuban to thank for that.

30-year-old Dorian Finney-Smith has spent the majority of his life without his father. Elbert Smith Jr. has been in prison since 1995. Smith visited one of his debtors, along with Diefen McGann, in 1995, and both of them were armed. One thing led to another, and McGann ended up taking the life of the debtor. 

Although Smith was there at the crime scene, he didn’t commit the crime. This didn’t help his case as he was sentenced to 44 years in prison.

Additionally, Cuban and the others also helped the former Mavs star get one of the best lawyers in the country. This greatly helped Elbert Smith Jr. get conditional freedom.

Finney-Smith played an instrumental role in Luka Doncic’s special run

Luka Doncic took the league by storm during the 2021-22 NBA season. Although Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors took home the championship, the Slovenian’s efforts were greatly recognized.

Finney-Smith played an instrumental role in the Mavs’ run to the Western Conference Finals. He averaged 11.0 points, 1.9 assists and 4.7 rebounds while starting a whopping 80 games for the Mavs. He spent four seasons with Doncic and the Mavs before joining the Brooklyn Nets last season.
