Stephen Curry will unquestionably go down in basketball history as one of the game’s most legendary figures. Despite the fact that not many colleges showed interest in him because of his height, Davidson’s coach took a liking to him. Curry now stands out on the floor with his incredible ability to shoot three-pointers despite the imposing giants that often dominate it. However, it was in college, under the leadership of his coach Bob McKillop, that he developed as a player.

Stephen Curry did his homework while making basketball history

Stephen Curry had an impact at Davidson that extended beyond basketball. ‘Underrated’ provides light on the difficult balance he had to strike between his love of basketball and his studies. Curry was committed to his academics as well as establishing basketball history for his college team. The standout guard of Davidson College, Stephen Curry, put on an incredible performance that helped his team win the NCAA Tournament against Gonzaga on March 21, 2008.

Early in the second half, Davidson was down by 11 points. And Curry had to rouse his squad and change the narrative. That’s exactly what he did, too. Curry became a scoring machine, taking over the game and leaving Gonzaga in disarray.

Curry lit up the court with an astounding 30 points in the second half alone, in a spellbinding display of his scoring power. And what did he do after the game?

Davidson Assistant Coach Matt Matheny also makes Curry’s documentary, ‘Underrated’.

He revealed how their game against Gonzaga was just one game out of a tournament. He said, “So we go back to the hotel and we have roughly 48 hours to prepare for the next game. So our players take advantage of that. And they do their homework.”

Stephen Curry then reveals that he finds it hilarious that in the biggest basketball moment of the year, the players are all in the hallway with other students doing their homework. He said, “But that’s just the Davidson experience. And it’s the best thing in the world.”

Stephen Curry almost lost his chance to play at Davidson

Stephen Curry’s discipline and temperament were probably greatly influenced by his upbringing in a demanding home. Parents Dell and Sonya Curry enforced strict rules to mold their children and impart virtues of perseverance and determination. Curry overcame obstacles to get into college. His perseverance brought him to Davidson College, the only school that saw potential in him despite his frail build.

Even with his basketball goals within grasp, Stephen almost lost his chance to attend Davidson. After receiving a text message containing a foul word, Sonya’s close supervision of her son’s actions, including monitoring his phone, resulted in a temporary confiscation of his cell phone.

Unintentionally, this episode led to a communication breakdown between Stephen and Bob McKillop, the coach of the Davidson basketball team. McKillop had begun wondering if he was considering other colleges.  Thankfully, Curry was able to explain the situation to his coach, highlighting how disciplined his home was. However, it all paid off as he now has four championship titles among many other accomplishments.
