Now that the trade deadline anxiety has faded with Feb. 8 well behind us, the NBA players can zoom in their attention on the Super Bowl LVIII festivities. With just one day to go until the two historic franchises battle it out for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the NBA, like the rest of the world, is divided into two camps: Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers.

NBA players reveal their picks for Super Bowl LVIII

While some, like Stephen Curry, are detached from the outcome because their favorite team (Carolina Panthers) did not make it, others have fully embraced the Super Bowl spirit, ferociously cheering for their favorite team to bring the hardware home. Belonging to the latter group is Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George, who made his allegiance to the 49ers clear with a brief but resounding, “Going with California.” Echoing similar sentiments are the Phoenix Suns’ stars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Although both of them agreed that it was hard to go against the reigning champions, their loyalties lie with the San Francisco team.

However, Rudy Gobert, who, unlike others, does not follow the NFL, has a peculiar reason to cheer for the 49ers. The Minnesota Timberwolves center is siding with the Niners because of his soft spot for “an inspiring story.” The Chiefs and the 49ers will go against each other for the second time in Super Bowl history. Their first meeting (Super Bowl LIV) ended in heartbreak for the 49ers as the Chiefs humbled them in a 31-20 loss. Therefore, this is a perfect opportunity for the 49ers to exact revenge and pen down an awe-inspiring comeback story.

Showing support for the other side was T-Wolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns, who thinks Patrick Mahomes is “getting to the Tom Brady level.” Although he would have wanted the Philadelphia Eagles to win, he will be supporting the Chiefs on Sunday. Kat isn’t the only Mahomes supporter in the house; Donovan Mitchell also shares the same sentiment: “It’s hard to bet against Pat. I’ll have to say Kansas City.” Dejounte Murray, on the contrary, remains disgruntled about the 49ers defeating his beloved Seattle Seahawks; thus, he’ll be rooting against them this Super Bowl.

And then there are a few, like Kawhi Leonard, who’ll tune in just for a good time. The Klaw stated, “The Chiefs, but I just want to see a good game. I like to see people be great. So I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the 49ers’ guys get it either.”
