Two days ago, LeBron James added another historic accolade when he was named one of the flag bearers for the upcoming Olympics. Now, he has a partner who coincidentally will also grace uncharted territory. Tennis megastar Coco Gauff will serve as the women’s flag bearer alongside James during the event.

Her appointment makes Gauff the first USA tennis player to have the honor of being a flag bearer. Additionally, she is also the youngest flag bearer in the history of the US Olympics at the age of just 20. Likewise, the two-time Grand Slam winner was over the moon to be given the hallmark opportunity of hoisting the proud US flag. And she couldn’t have asked for better company.

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony. I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is – at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world,” Gauff said according to Essentially Sports’ Grant Afseth.

Not only will Gauff march down with the flag, but this will also be her Olympic debut after missing out in 2021 due to testing positive for COVID-19. Alluding to her 2023 Grand Slam win, Gauff is among the favorites at the international tournament and is itching with her desire to fulfill her childhood dream.

Coco Gauff is hungry for a medal

In 2020, merely 17 at the time, Gauff had to battle the hard truth of her inability to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. At the time she was distraught and the tears didn’t stop flowing. Fast forward four years and now the 20-year-old has a chance to claim not once, but three medals for the USA if she maintains her recent spell of captivating tennis.

For her, the color of the medal doesn’t matter. All she wants is to win a medal, which was part of the vision list she prepared as a child.

“One of the goals I wrote down on my vision thing, vision note, in my phone, was to win a medal in the Olympics… I’ll be completely honest; I don’t really care what event it is in. I feel like gold, silver, or bronze, whatever medal it is, is one of those things; it doesn’t matter,” Gauff expressed.
