The WNBA is barreling toward the playoffs and a monumental leadership transition. One of them falls on Adam Silver’s shoulders. As the search for its next commissioner gets underway, the choice of who will lead that search has ignited intense debate across the basketball community. Now the NBA commissioner, fresh off enlisting Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for the Clippers investigation and hiring the investment banking firm PJT Partners for the Seattle and Las Vegas expansion project, has also delegated the search for the WNBA commissioner.

Prominent sports journalist Christine Brennan, who authored a NY Times bestseller on Caitlin Clark in 2025, confirmed on social media that the NBA has hired the executive search arm of Excel Sports Management. Fans would recognize the very agency that represents the Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark. Excel will spearhead the hunt for outgoing commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s successor.

Brennan reported, “This is big news for the WNBA. I can confirm that the NBA has hired the executive search arm of Caitlin Clark’s agency to find the next WNBA commissioner. Perhaps the ridiculous minimization of Clark’s impact, led by Cathy Engelbert, is coming to an end.”

The executive search decision comes after a turbulent period for Engelbert, who faced mounting criticism throughout her tenure from media figures such as Stephen A. Smith, Dave Portnoy, and Bill Simmons, as well as fan backlash over league controversies.

The scrutiny reached a boiling point following revelations from WNBPA First Vice President Napheesa Collier, who claimed Engelbert remarked during an Unrivaled 3-on-3 league conversation that Clark “should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court because without the platform the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything.”

While Engelbert strongly denied the exchange and expressed disappointment with how the conversation was characterized, the episode exposed lingering friction between league leadership and its star talent. Clark herself responded with a measured stance on modern sports leadership, emphasizing that success relies on building genuine relationships across front offices, among commissioners, and with teammates alike.

Despite hopes that bringing in Excel Search & Advisory would signal a fresh start for league governance, news of the firm’s involvement has met significant skepticism among Clark’s fans online.

Particularly as Brennan predicts that “the ridiculous minimization of Clark’s impact” would end if Excel finds a more favorable commissioner. Because fans’ faith in Excel’s CC management hasn’t been all there lately.

Many supporters doubt whether an athlete representation agency, even through its specialized executive consulting division, is properly equipped to solve the structural and cultural tensions brewing within the league.

Fans cast doubts on NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s move

A vocal contingent of supporters responded to Brennan’s report with immediate hesitation regarding Excel’s track record. They questioned whether Excel’s overall management strategy for Caitlin Clark has been effective since she arrived in the professional ranks. As one fan bluntly put it, “That agency is not who I would hire ever. I think CLARK needs to fire her management and Agent tbh,” questioning the agency’s broader strategy.

Other than Clark, Excel also represents other WNBA players, including Napheesa Collier, Arike Ogunbowale, NaLyssa Smith and DiJonai Carrington. WNBA supporters quickly raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest from overlapping client representation. Silver reportedly consulting Sophie Cunningham in the commissioner hunt has already gotten mixed reactions. Fans now argue that using an agency to handle prominent players’ contracts complicates an already delicate leadership search.

“Isn’t Clark’s agency the very same agency who represents Stephanie White? So maybe they’ll represent interests more aligned w/ White than Clark. It’s not like her agent shut down the ‘cAiTLiN iS aN uNcOaChAbLe diVa’ hitpieces that sounded like they’d come from within the Fever,” a fan theorized.

Another skeptical viewer expressed fatigue over ongoing league narratives and fan toxicity, lamenting the timing of the transition. “Too late for this years playoffs. And no it will never come to an end as long as there are haters in the WNBA. They need for the fans just to quit watching and attending the games and go back to what they once were and let them get a taste of that. Just a crying same!”

The choice of search firm also drew disbelief from observers who want to see concrete results before giving Silver any props. “i will only believe this when i actually SEE IT WITH MY OWN 2 EYEBALLS,” a skeptic echoed the sentiment of many others.

Critics worried that bringing in Clark’s sports agency might amount to nothing more than a temporary public relations move. “No faith in the agent or agency. It’s gonna be all hat and no cattle 🐄. WNBA will fade back to obscurity. The competition is obviously fake,” another observer added.

At the same time, fans pointed out that Excel’s client roster extends well beyond Clark,  suggesting that multiple perspectives are represented under the agency’s umbrella. “Idk about this, Excel hasn’t really helped CC. And before anyone says anything, this is the same agency that represents Dijonai Carrington, Arike and Caitlin. So some adults are in the room,” one user noted with a wise disclaimer, knowing WNBA fans aren’t to be taken lightly.

As the NBA and WNBA move forward with their search processes, public reaction shows the immense pressure on Adam Silver. Finding a commissioner who can sustain the WNBA’s unprecedented business growth while rebuilding trust across a diverse player base will be the defining challenge for the sport’s next era.
