“Turning Golfers Against Each Other”: Amid Staggering $3,000,000,000 LIV Golf News, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Strikes Out With “Two Edge Sword” Claim

The $3 billion deal that will see bitter rivals LIV Golf and the PGA Tour merge has stunned the sports world. The two organizations have been at odds ever since the emergence of LIV Golf. This led to many star golfers leaving the PGA Tour for more money and turned them against each other. When asked about his views on the merger, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver gave a response from a fan’s perspective, while talking about the benefits it would have on the NBA if such a deal ever broke out for the league.

The news of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf signing a deal to turn into one big conglomerate had many golfers feeling disappointed, especially the PGA Tour pros. 4x Major winner Rory McIlroy and one of LIV Golf’s biggest detractors revealed his disappointment with the deal and questioned whether he would be remunerated for showing loyalty to the PGA Tour. But where does the NBA Commissioner stand on it?

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was the most recent guest on The Dan Gilbert Show. Adam Silver and Dan Gilbert went on talk about Silver’s views on the latest news of the historic merger of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

To that, Silver said, “I don’t know enough about what really went on there on the inside. I guess I’m not so surprised, given that there was an ongoing lawsuit and investigation. And the fact that they were; I think hurting the golfers at the end of the day. I mean they were turning golfers against each other at the end of the day.”

The NBA Commissioner said that this was just his thoughts from a fan’s perspective. He went on to draw comparisons between golf and basketball and how both sports are extremely global, with interest around the world.

Silver added, “This is for good and bad that when Saudis invest in sports, it gets outside’s attention. Now, I don’t want to complain about that because we want to get outside’s attention.” He believed that investment from Saudi Arabians is a two-edged sword.

The merger will get the sport much-needed exposure

The merger will garner more attention from outside the United States, which can also be a huge opportunity for the NBA in the future. However, he also mentioned how some of the investors also have money invested in some of the biggest American corporations. Silver went on to say, “I also think it’s a two-edged sword.”

When Adam Silver went on to talk specifically about the NBA, he mentioned how people were dismissive of the benefits that came from the commonality of the sport. He gave an example of the NBA Finals being distributed around the world and how that is an opportunity to bring people closer together.
