The Jordan family couldn’t have been happier as Michael Jordan’s name captured an eternal place in the history books. The NBA recently showed a grand gesture of honor to His Airness by naming the NBA Most Valuable Player trophy after him. Since the announcement and the unveiling of the trophy, many have praised the design of the trophy. The design symbolized various achievements of the 6x NBA champion on the court. MJ’s son Marcus Jordan has broken his silence recently on the magnificent honor with five words.

The man behind the legendary Jordan sneakers is Mark Smith, retired VP of Innovative special projects at Nike, Inc. He played an influential part in the trophy design alongside the Jordan brand designer.

Incidentally, Smith had also designed the custom Jordan shoes for Marcus’ sneaker store. Smitty, as Marcus calls him, made the GOAT’s son happy again with his trophy design. Marcus shared Smitty’s trophy design on his Instagram story which read, “Smitty does it again“. In another story, he called the trophy, “Legendary“.

The Iconic Michael Jordan Trophy

The Michael Jordan trophy is sculpted around the universal theme ‘RAW TO REFINED’. Smitty took to Instagram and wrote, “It’s been an absolute honor and the creative opportunity and challenge of a lifetime to have designed and sculpted the award.” He further mentioned how Air Jordan wanted the recipients of the award to see themselves in it and not a likeness of MJ. Smith went on to credit his fellow designers, namely Bobby LeGaye, Pete Mauhar, and Michael Nolte.

The designers have truly sculpted one of a kind trophy since each feature has a story of its own. The trophy is 23.6 inches tall and weighs 23.6 pounds symbolizing Jordan’s iconic jersey number ’23’ and his 6x NBA championship.

The five-sided base denotes the 5 MVP awards that the Chicago Bulls star received during his playing days. The trophy symbolizes a man emerging out of rocky terrain and reaching out for the crystal basketball.

NBA unveiled 5 newly designed trophies alongside the Michael Jordan Trophy. The other five trophies were Clutch player of the year, Defensive player of the year, Rookie of the year, Sixth player of the year, and Most improved player of the year. The trophies were named after Jerry West, Hakeem Olajuwon, Wilt Chamberlain, John Havlicek, and George Mikan respectively.
