Before finding love with actress Gabrielle Union, NBA star Dwyane Wade was previously married to his high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches-Wade in 2002. Their marriage only lasted five years, following which he began dating Union in 2008. In 2020, Funches and Wade’s younger child came out as transgender following which Wade recently filed a court case on Zaya’s behalf to legally change her gender and name. However, this seemingly did not sit well with Funches, who later appeared in court to express her disagreement.

Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and Siohvaughn Funches share two children, Zaire and Zaya. When the former couple legally parted ways in 2010, Wade had won the sole custody of the kids. Meanwhile, Funches has made several claims and allegations towards Wade following the gender petition.

As per recent reports, Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches has accused the 3x NBA champion for violating the agreement they had signed when Wade won the custody battle. Apparently, Funches’ lawyer submitted a copy of the agreement to the court as a proof. The agreement states that Wade had to get his ex-wife’s opinion on ‘the major decisions affecting the care, welfare, activities, health, education, and religious upbringing of their two children’.

Furthermore, Funches asked the court to dismiss the gender petition. She claimed that Wade was ‘persuading’ Zaya to go forth with the petition. Funches further believed that the whole move was for financial gains. She then revealed what Wade had told her during a meeting in 2022.

Wade reportedly said that, “a lot of money had been already made and that additional money will be made in relation to our child’s name and gender issue.

Funches further added, “Given [Wade’s] high-profile status as a professional athlete, our children’s lives have been highly publicized. [Wade] has appeared on national television shows and in media reports regarding our child’s name and gender change. I am concerned that our child is being commercialized at a young age and also of the uncontrollable consequences of media exposure i.e. cyberbullying, statements and/or pictures taken out of context of our child, and unwanted spotlight focused on our child.

Wade’s reply to Funches

After Siohvaughn Funches appealed to the court to dismiss Dwyane Wade’s petition, the 13x NBA All-Star chose not to remain silent and share his side of the story. Funches had accused Wade of not talking to her before making the decision. Additionally, she asked the court to waive the petition and wait till Zaya turned 18 to make the legal changes.

Wade then released a statement via his Instagram handle stating, “Zaya is not that same 3 year old child anymore and she’s screaming that to the world but most importantly to her MOTHER! No one in our house would ever force Zaya or any of our four children to do anything against their will, much less force and identity on them.”
