After more than nine months in prison, WNBA star Brittney Griner was finally released on Thursday. She was released in exchange for infamous arms dealer Viktor Bout as the negotiation between the two countries ended positively for Griner and her family. Her fans around the country celebrated the Phoenix Mercury center’s freedom. Also, celebrities and public figures around the world shared their excitement as well. This includes NBA superstar Stephen Curry, who celebrated the news alongside conveying a cautionary reminder to the American people.

So understandably, Curry was elated for Griner’s return to the country. The two-time MVP had been a huge voice of support for Griner ever since her detainment. However, he had a serious message for everyone before sharing his excitement.

Stephen Curry celebrates the release of Brittney Griner

Stephen Curry shared his reaction to Griner’s release during the 2022 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards. He had a strong message during the speech as well. Curry started off by saying that he is glad Brittney Griner is finally home with her family.

The Dubs guard further added that it is a reminder for everyone to use their platform to speak about issues like this. The four-time NBA champion clearly stated the fight should continue for every American that is “wrongfully detained.” He also thanked President Joe Biden’s administration for facilitating Griner’s release.

Curry celebrated the former WNBA champion’s release via an Instagram story. He shared the video of Griner boarding a plane to the U.S. The caption read, “Welcome home BG! Thank you every one that used their platform to make this happen and keep BG on the front of the radar. Especially @potus and your administration & team. More American citizens and their families need this outcome too.”

However, the greatest shooter had an important request too amidst all the celebration. “More American citizens and their families need this outcome too,” reminded the Dubs superstar.

Curry was one of the most vocal NBA players about Griner’s situation. He urged the government multiple times to broker a deal swiftly to mitigate the situation. He also gave an emotional speech during the 2022 ESPYs alongside WNBA stars. Furthermore, he gave a shout-out to Griner during the Warriors’ championship ring night.

NBA stars happy for Griner’s freedom

Stephen Curry was not the only star who celebrated the release of Brittney Griner. Notably, his Golden State Warriors teammate Draymond Green shared his reaction as well. Also, Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving took to Twitter to celebrate. NBA legends Magic Johnson and Scottie Pippen shared their excitement via Twitter as well.

Superstar LeBron James also shared a message after her release. He congratulated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and everyone who helped with the freeing of Griner.
