It’s been almost six months since Brittney Griner was detained in Russia. As the US government tries to negotiate her safe return with Russia, the WNBA star, who was arrested on drug charges, is still waiting in confinement. Now, after initial reluctance, Russia finally broke silence and is ready to take action.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova revealed that they ready to take concrete steps. They are willing to have a professional conversation about freeing Griner. It was initially reported that Russia would be willing to exchange Griner and another American for an international illegal arms dealer, Viktor Bout.

Zakharova said, “People who are to deal with these matters are ready“. She continued, “And this work is not done in the public eye”. According to the government, Griner was wrongfully detained. On August 4, Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison.

The Phoenix Mercury star is not the only American said to be involved in a possible exchange. Paul Whelan, convicted on espionage charges, is also part of the deal. While the situation has been difficult, the latest report provides hope to Griner and her family.
