Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for several months. She landed herself in hot water after Russian officials seized cannabis oil-infused vape cartridges from her luggage. After being detained since mid-February, the WNBA star was sentenced to nine years in prison for Russian drug charges in early August.

As Griner continues to endure difficulties overseas, her wife, Cherelle Griner, is doing everything she can to bring her partner home. Despite her legitimate concern that she may never see her again, she continues to strive for her wife’s release.

Their relationship has been a beautiful one. They met as undergraduates at Baylor University in Texas. The two didn’t start dating until years later, but they reconnected following Griner’s divorce with ex-wife Glory Johnson. The two quickly fell in love, with Griner proposing to Cherelle in August 2018. They married about a year later and share a beautiful marriage.

The couple has frequently poured love over each other on social media since then. Brittney Griner did exactly that for her wife on their second wedding anniversary, writing a lovely long message on Instagram.

She expressed that she will never forget the first time they met and how Cherelle has impacted her life for the better. Griner referenced the Bible at the end of her message to emphasize her love, writing, “You will always be my Proverbs 31 Woman!”

Brittney Griner went through a tumultuous divorce with her first wife

Before tying knots with Cherelle, Brittney Griner was married to Glory Johnson. Johnson once detailed her short-lived marriage with the WNBA star.

She described how her marriage to the Phoenix Mercury star fell apart less than a month after they married. Despite deciding to marry Brittney Griner, Johnson stated she had never been with a woman before and did not consider herself gay.

In 2014, Griner and Johnson confirmed their engagement. In April 2015, police were called to the couple’s Arizona home in response to a domestic violence call. Griner and Johnson had both suffered minor injuries as a consequence of a physical confrontation between them.

However, the couple mended quickly and tied knots a few weeks later in May. Johnson announced her pregnancy a month later after going through an IVF procedure. Griner filed for an annulment the next day, one month into their marriage.

Griner stated in the annulment application that she married under pressure and was not involved in the IVF process. In an amended filing, she acknowledged she was involved, but felt compelled to do so.

The couple’s divorce was finalized in June 2016.
