It has been more than eight months since Brittney Griner was detained in Russia for the possession of cannabis. Ever since her arrest, multiple celebrities have voiced their support for the WNBA star. Now, women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan has joined the list of celebrities to show support for Griner. Morgan shared a video of her walking wearing a shirt with Griner’s face, on social media. The description of the post read, “A statement piece.”

Morgan is one of the most popular soccer players in the world. She has won multiple gold medals for the U.S national women’s team. Morgan helped team USA win three straight wins in the FIFA World Cup. After a disappointing second-place finish in the 2011 World Cup, she led the team to two straight victories in 2015 and 2019. She has scored 119 senior goals in 198 appearances for Team USA.
Before playing for the senior team, she also helped the Under-20 team win the World Cup in 2008. The striker has been playing professional soccer since 2008. She is currently the captain of the San Diego Wave FC?of the?National Women’s Soccer League.

Alex Morgan is the latest celebrity to show her support for Brittney Griner. However, the fans are divided. While some slated Morgan’s gesture, some showed support. While some fans thanked Morgan for showing support for the Phoenix Mercury center, some pointed out Griner’s alleged crime of carrying cannabis to a foreign country. During the court hearings, she stated she carried it because of hasty packing. However, the Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison.

Like the soccer legend, Griner has also won multiple accolades for the country. She won two straight Olympic gold medals in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics with the U.S national team. Also, she won two straight FIBA World Cups for Team USA in 2014 and 2018. Griner has been a huge part of the national team ever since she started playing professionally in 2013.
The FIBA World Cup 2022 was recently conducted in Australia after the finish of the WNBA season. Team USA clinched the gold medal yet again by beating China in the finals. After winning gold, Breanna Stewart gave a shout-out?to Griner. The two played together for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the?Russian Premier League.
