American Tennis Icon Andre Agassi’s Unheard Connection With Michael Jordan’s NBA Return in 1995

Back after his first three-peat, Michael Jordan shocked the NBA. He announced his retirement from basketball and shifted to the Minor League. However, ‘His Airness’ couldn’t keep the game out for long. After just two years away from the sport, Jordan felt the hunger to compete once again. And he announced his return in style with sneakers made popular by tennis legend Andre Agassi.

Andre Agassi was an American tennis star. The former World number 1 won eight major titles in his reign. Moreover, Agassi is also the second of five men to achieve a career Grand Slam. As one of the best players of his time, Jordan chose his sneaker to make his infamous ‘I’m back’ return in 1995.

Jordan brought out the Air Challenge LWP to announce his stepping back on the court.

Michael Jordan takes Agassi’s help

Agassi played a huge part in making tennis sneakers big in the market. Nike gave him the crown back in the 90s, as was the spearhead of the sport. And the Air Challenge LWPs were his signature shoe. What made it more famous is the shoe was co-signed by Michael Jordan. Taking a helping hand from the Tennis giant, Jordan came rolling in his Corvette. Even the basketball fans started to buy the shoe after Jordan’s iconic way back.

After his stint in baseball, the Chicago red just called him back. So in 1995, MJ found the perfect way to announce his return to the NBA. All it took was two words, ‘I’m back’. These two words were enough to send shock waves around the entire league. The happiest were the Chicago Bulls, who were getting the best player in the world to suit up for them. Likewise, his return to the hardwood was big for both himself as well as the franchise.

His first return made MJ the legend he is today. He made three more winning trips to the finals and took his tally to six. Jordan solidified himself as a winner of the highest caliber.

His competitive spirit haunted the league for those eight years, and Michael Jordan became one of the biggest names ever in basketball. MJ retired once again before returning for a few seasons with the Wizards. The six-time MVP left his voice in every arena. And his impact will forever live on basketball.
