The Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade is fighting a legal battle for the change of gender and name of his 15-year-old transgender daughter Zaya since August. However, the proceedings have slowed down due to an objection from Zaya’s biological mother Siohvaughn Funches-Wade. Amid frustrating legalities, Wade’s wife and renowned actress Gabrielle Union drew parallels to her current household situation with her recent movie, The Inspection.

Gabrielle Union has been married to Dwyane Wade since 2014 and the duo has a 3 1/2-year-old daughter named Kaavia James. Apart from James, Wade has three other children, Zaya, Zaire, and Xavier. Recently, Gabriel Union admitted that her recent film had a different effect on her as a viewer, given the struggles of her stepdaughter Zaya Wade.

Gabrielle Union drew parallels between the scenarios of her movie and the gender change battle that her daughter Zaya is fighting. Union shared that her movie inspired her to be more prepared to fight for her family and her future roles.?

In ‘The Inspection,’ Union portrayed the role of Inez French, a homophobic prison guard who condemns her son for being gay. Union reckoned that some of the scenes in the movie reminded her of the present circumstances in her family. She admitted that the scenes resonated with the conflicts at her home. Therefore, the film proved to be a bigger challenge for the renowned actress.

Union shared her thoughts in reference to Dwyane Wade’s ongoing legal battle for the identity of their daughter Zaya. She also reckoned that one of the scenes took different importance as he own child was battling for her identity.

Dwyane Wade’s legal battle
Dwyane Wade filed a petition for recognition of his daughter’s gender change and the issuance of a new birth certificate. However, Wade’s former wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade objected to the change, claiming that Wade was doing it for financial benefits.

Zaya is not an adult yet.? So, she will need a court order and the blessing of her parents for the gender and name change. But, Funches-Wade claimed that Wade was pressuring their daughter to get the change done in lieu of financial opportunities. The 41-year-old also argued that the change should not be made until Zaya turned 18.?
