NBA legends have shown an exceptional awareness of the socio-political scene around them in recent times. Even after retiring from the league, some NBA stars have chosen to indulge themselves in social and political activism by being vocal about the pressing concerns of the day. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one such individual who has been a trailblazer in NBA stars speaking out against injustice. Brittney Griner’s wife Cherelle Griner recently joined the six-time NBA champion in highlighting some bleak updates coming from the state of Florida.
Kareem holds a reputation for calling a spade a spade. When it comes to speaking up for the common people, the Lakers legend is never reluctant to go against authority. His stance on some controversial bills that Sen. Ron DeSantis is trying to pass in Florida received support from Cherelle Griner.

“One of the main historic reasons that women can be suppressed despite their numbers is sheer physical force. This kind of intimidation by threat of violence is the same basic idea. Do what we say or we’ll kill you. It is thinly disguised domestic abuse,” the 6x-NBA champion said.
Speaking of the abortion controversy, he added, “The most important part of the argument is deciding when the government has the right to compel a person to do something that is life-threatening, such as going through a pregnancy, when they don’t want to.”
Cherelle Griner shared a post on her Instagram story, which criticizes this draconian measure in South Carolina. Moreover, the post has also called out Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has infamously been trying to impede the academia in Florida’s public colleges and universities. “Are y’all paying attention in Florida? Ron DeSantis is working to pass a bill to remove all Black and LatinX fraternities, sororities, African American studies, Jewish studies, Feminist studies and Gender studies,” the post quoted one viral tweet.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, too, has vehemently criticized Ron DeSantis.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s critique of the Governor
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been in the limelight for quite some time for his controversial views and policies. The Governor has been recently trying to pass certain bills that impede the study of certain fields of humanities, such as gender studies, feminism, Critical Race Theory, and so on in Florida’s public colleges and universities. DeSantis and the trustees he appointed to Florida’s institutes labeled these areas as beliefs akin to religion.

Commenting on DeSantis’ moves to interfere with academia, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said, “You may find it hard to care about a small college in Florida, but what we are witnessing is part of a much bigger and more insidious campaign to change education from a lively exchange of ideas to dogmatic preaching.”
