NBA all-time great Michael Jordan is still one of the most popular celebrities. He helped popularize the game of basketball around the world. However, superstardom comes with the price of privacy and MJ was no different. Fans would recognize him wherever he goes and he could not do some of the most regular things. The Chicago Bulls legend once revealed that he stopped going to the movies because fans would want to take photographs or get autographs from him during the movie.

MJ sat down with GQ for an exclusive interview in 1989 where he discussed a variety of things. During the interview, he admitted that he disappears when he doesn’t want to be around people. “I go into hid?ing,” he said. “I just stay in. There’s many days I don’t want to be around people and I’m a nasty person, an evil person. I stay in till I’m back in the mood to deal with peo?ple again.”

However, this was not always the case. Just three years before the interview with GQ, in 1986, Jordan revealed he would try not to isolate himself from people. Especially kids who take him as a role model.

Michael Jordan wanted to be around his fans

In 1986, a rare documentary about Michael Jordan by Jeannie Morris was released. In one instance, MJ talked about the fans. Jordan said, “I try not to isolate away from people. I wanna be a part of the people. And when I see these kids and the way they try to follow in my footsteps, it’s a compliment and I really enjoy that.”

Jordan added that he feels like the kids are his friends and he can sit down with them to have a normal conversation. The six-time champion first became a father in 1988 when his oldest son Jeffrey Jordan was born.

When MJ first came into the league in 1984, there was a huge hype. However, not everyone would have predicted what he had achieved ever since. He took the league by storm in his first year and won the Rookie of the Year award deservedly. His second year was marred by injury as he almost missed the whole season.

He then came back stronger in the next season and averaged a career-high 37.1 points per game. Despite this, he did not win the MVP award that year. However, he won the award next year averaging 35 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. Jordan then went on to win six rings in his career for the Bulls. He has also won almost every individual accolade imaginable in the league.
