Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen was one of the best players to play in the NBA. He helped Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls win multiple championships. While many consider Michael Jordan as the ‘GOAT’ of the NBA, Pippen is considered his ‘Robin’ for the Bulls.

However, while Pippen and Jordan were incredible on the court together, the same can’t be said about their off-court relations. Scottie has passed comments about Jordan multiple times. And recently, he was trending after he claimed that he didn’t win the DPOY award because of Michael Jordan. He said that the media’s sole focus on Michael was the reason he didn’t win the DPOY award.

Is Scottie obsessed with Jordan?

When this was discussed on the ‘Brother From Another’ YouTube channel, Michael Smith admitted that Scottie is one of the best perimeter defenders of all time. He also said, “But it wasn’t because people were fixated on Michael Jordan. You are fixated on Michael Jordan. He is more obsessed with Michael Jordan than any of us could ever be and I am the biggest Jordan fan alive…”.

Smith also said that the players who had won the DPOY award during Pippen’s time deserved it more. And it wasn’t like he was robbed of the award.

Then Vincent Goodwill said that if it wasn’t for Michael Jordan, we wouldn’t know Scottie Pippen and that he would be just another good player. He also said that if Scottie was playing for any team other than the Bulls, he would be just another player.

He said that mostly the big men dominated the defensive game back then. Centers and power forwards picked up the DPOY award most of the time.

And the fans seem to be divided on this. Some fans think that Pippen’s role is diminished because of Jordan’s stardom.

One fan commented, “This was a stupid segment, they always try to disrespect Pippen meanwhile jordan never did anything without him”.

Scottie Pippen’s DPOY runner-ups

In 1995, Dikembe Mutombo won the DPOY award and Scottie Pippen came second. Pippen averaged 2.9 steals, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. And Mutombo averaged 0.5 steals, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks. As close as the stats are, the votes weren’t close. Pippen received 16 first-place votes while Mutombo received 45 votes.

The Bulls legend was again the runner-up for the DPOY award the very next year. This time he lost the award to Gary Payton. Even though he hasn’t won the DPOY award, Scottie Pippen has made 10 All-Defensive team selections during his career.

Michael Jordan won the DPOY award in 1987 and Dennis Rodman won the award in 1990 and 1991. However, Pippen has more All-Defensive team selections than both.

So it is safe to say that Scottie Pippen was one of the best defenders ever. He was just unlucky to not win the DPOY award.
