What motivated the development of Creed II and III?

Halfway through the conversation with the hosts of Inside the NBA, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley asked Michael B. Jordan a question that many were probably curious about. The sports drama is the third installment in the Creed series, a spin-off of the Sylvester Stallone-starred Rocky movie franchise. Based on that, Barkley asked the ‘Black Panther’ famed actor if he had any idea that the Rocky spin-off would have its own series when he did the first installment.

In response, Michael B. Jordan said, “I mean for me, when me and Ryan [Coogler] first did the first one, I had an idea that we could possibly do more. You know obviously, you have like six Rocky movies. I mean, to be able to do three Creeds was definitely an accomplishment.”

Reflecting on his experience directing the movie, he added, “And then, you know, the third installment was probably the most personal to me. At that point I’ve lived with Adonis, you know over the last eight years and at that point I felt like I was the only person to be able to kind of step behind the camera and direct it. So, I felt like it was time for me to step behind the camera and tell that story.”

The Jordan-starred movie has its fair share of eagerly awaiting fans. However, the film has also faced major backlash from fans due to the absence of a very significant character.

The rift between Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan-led movie crew

The decades-old Rocky movie series could be considered veteran actor Sylvester Stallone’s ‘baby’. The entire series was built from Stallone’s idea and the 76-year-old actor had appeared in all six of the successful Rocky films and two of the Creed films as well. Creed III will be the first movie without Stallone and the millionaire filmmaker had some rather interesting comments to make about the latest installment. In December 2022, ‘Sly’ appeared for an interview where he revealed his thoughts on the Michael B. Jordan project.

Stallone stated, “I’ve seen actors produce and direct, literally quit in two weeks. I’m done, I mean seriously. They’re great actors but obviously, he enjoyed the process so he’ll probably take it to the next level. Poor guy that’s a lot of work.”

Meanwhile, Stallone has also criticized the absence of his character Rocky Balboa in Michael B. Jordan’s latest venture as a ‘regretful’ decision.
