March Madness is almost over as teams now progress to the Final Four. While the men’s basketball teams prepare for the semifinals scheduled for April 2, the women’s teams are all set for Thursday night to compete for a spot in the finals. The men’s Final Four spots were recently filled by the San Diego State Aztecs, the Atlantic Owls, the UConn Huskies and the Miami Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Virginia Tech Hokies and the LSU Tigers took up the final spots in the women’s division. Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson recently gave a shoutout to one particular women’s basketball team and their coach following a big win as fans joined in.

Magic Johnson congratulates the South Carolina Gamecocks

Following South Carolina’s big win, Hall of Famer Magic Johnson took to Twitter to commend their coach Dawn Staley and the team’s effort. This is the third consecutive NCAA tournament where the Gamecocks successfully advanced to the Final Four. After recently defeating the Maryland Terrapins in the Elite Eight, the defending champions will face Iowa for their next matchup in Dallas.

To express his support toward the team, Johnson wrote on his tweet, Congratulations to Coach @dawnstaley and the entire @gamecockwbb team on securing a ticket to the Final Four with their victory over Maryland!”

Led by forward Aliyah Boston, the Gamecocks claimed an 86-75 victory over Maryland. Boston impressively dropped 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Zia Cooke added 18 points and eight rebounds.

NBA Twitter nods in agreement with Johnson

Of course, the NBA legend wasn’t the only one who celebrated South Carolina’s victory as they remain just two games away from claiming back-to-back titles. Twitterati showered the team with praises and gave coach Dawn Staley much-deserved credit for the win. One fan wrote, “She the standard now, she built that into a monster.” Another commented, Gonna be a helluva battle. Let’s go #gamecockwbb !!!” 

Gamecock fans were quick to commend Staley for her efforts and skills as the defending champion’s head coach.
