NBA fans have had the luxury of witnessing some superhumans and formidable teams during the league’s existence. With every new team that lifts the silverware, fans like to compare that team to the great dynasties of the yesteryears. Gilbert Arenas recently talked about a hot topic among NBA fans. In an interview with VladTV, the former NBA player talked about taking the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan over Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors.

Six years ago, the Warriors accomplished what was undoubtedly their most remarkable achievement of the franchise. Golden State finished the 2015-16 season with a 73-9 record. The Warriors were the first–and still the only–NBA franchise to record 73 wins in an 82-game regular season.

The Warriors accomplished this incredible achievement under the supervision of Steve Kerr. Interestingly, a squad headed by Steve Kerr broke the record set by the coach’s former team, the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96.

Steve Kerr was a core member of that Bulls team, which was spearheaded by the legendary Michael Jordan. This iteration of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s 1990s Bulls memorably established a season victory record of 72. This Chicago roster was athletic, defensively sound, and arguably boasted the league’s greatest tandem. With Jordan, Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Ron Harper in the lineup, perhaps no team in NBA history has possessed a more fierce defensive quartet.

The Warriors, however, aren’t remembered as lovingly as the Bulls, owing in great portion to what unfolded later. The Warriors famously blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers. A season that saw them boasting an unparalleled offensive motor, perhaps turned off at the worst time for them. Unlike the Dubs, the Bulls had a perfect season, winning their fourth championship that year.

The record-shattering Golden State finished the 2016 season in bitter despair. However, adding Kevin Durant to the squad in the off-season made the team literally unstoppable. Durant’s maiden campaign with the Dubs was undoubtedly the most flawless assimilation of a superstar player in NBA history.

Everyone’s strengths seemed to complement one another beautifully. With a postseason record of 16-1 and lifting the championship, the 2017 Warriors solidified themselves as one of the greatest teams ever assembled.

According to Gilbert Arenas, however, the dogged defense of the ’96 Chicago Bulls would be too much for the Warriors. “Ron Harper, Scottie, Jordan, Dennis….like they had more players that can throw defensively at them versus…who’s guarding Jordan? Okay now, who’s guarding Pippen?”

Arenas also remarked that Steve Kerr is the only person who knows who would prevail in this hypothetical matchup. “To really get a real true perspective on an answer, there’s only one person that can change my mind, Steve Kerr. You played, and you coached. He’s the only one, no matter what he says, I agree with him. He’s the only person… whatever he says, I’ll agree… He was part of it so he would know if his team was better than the team he is coaching,” Arenas mentioned.

Steve Kerr was a lights-out shooter during his time with the historic Chicago Bulls. He averaged 8.4 points and 2.3 assists per game and sank numerous clutch shots, despite having Michael Jordan on the squad.

Arenas is totally accurate when he says Kerr is the only one who can give a real perspective. However, it is unclear if Kerr will favor the team for which he competed or the team he coached. He’ll almost certainly choose the team for which he played, but the Warriors’ high-octane offense, that he built, may sway him.
