Celtics Poster-Boy Shuts Down Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen Comparisons: “Last Year Y’all Wanted to Trade Us”

The holiday week has had the Boston Celtics on a roll, winning three straight games in a dominant fashion. The All-Star duo Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have led the Celtics with All-time performances through the impressive run. Incidentally, in their win against the Minnesota Timberwolves before Christmas, the duo surpassed another All-time great NBA duo, bringing forth comparisons from fans. However, Tatum wasn’t a fan of these comparisons.


Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown surpassed Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen on an All-time duos list. Following this, the NBA world showered them with comparisons with the 6x NBA champions. However, in a candid admission, Tatum shut down the media comparisons referencing the off-season rumors from last year.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have uplifted the Celtics to NBA relevancy since the Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen days in 2008.  However, the narratives surrounding them haven’t been consistent over the years. Incidentally, Tatum pointed out the same in a heartfelt admission while addressing recent success.

After a blowout win against the Timberwolves a few days ago, Tatum and Brown surpassed Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in the All-time duos’ list of most 30-point games together. Jordan and Pippen, who won six championships together, stand at 16 games. After another impressive win against the Houston Rockets last night, Tatum and Brown stand at 18 games. 

The young duo’s surpassing of Jordan and Pippen brought forth a frenzy of comparisons by media and fans. However, Tatum wasn’t a fan of these comparisons. Moreover, he also called out the media and disapproved of their conflicting narratives surrounding him and Brown. 

In last night’s post-game press conference, when asked about the comparisons, Tatum replied, “Last year y’all wanted to trade one of us, now you’re saying Mike and Scottie. We’re not as bad as you said but we’re not as good as Mike and Scottie.”

Due to back-to-back playoff failures, the duo came under fire as fans demanded the Celtics break up the pairing. However, the Celtics retained the union. To the surprise of many, the young duo made it to the NBA Finals last season and are having another dominant run this year.

Since Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown arrived in ‘Titletown’ Boston in 2017 and 2018, respectively, the Celtics have tasted immense success. In the past five years, the Celtics have made it to 2x Eastern Conference Finals, 1x Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, and 1x NBA Finals. Likewise, the Celtics are having another impressive run this season. With a league-leading record of 25-10, the Celtics sit at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Moreover, Tatum and Brown are having career years individually this season. Tatum is averaging 31.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. Brown is averaging 27 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists for the season.
