“Cheerleader” Mother Sonya Managed to Encourage Opponents by Shouting at Stephen Curry During Games

At every Golden State Warriors playoff game, be it at Oracle or Chase Center, the entire Curry family shows up to support Stephen Curry. According to Stephen Curry, his mother, Sonya, is his biggest courtside supporter. She has been by his side since his AAU days throughout collegiate basketball and in the NBA.

Recently, Steph was in ‘In-depth with Graham Bensinger’ where he talked about his mother, who fueled him from the stands.

In the interview, Stephen Curry mentioned that he loves the fact that his parents are supportive. Correctly so, as Dell Curry and Sonya Curry were in the stands when he broke Ray Allen’s record for the most three-pointers made in the NBA. He shared an emotional moment with Sonya, as Steve Kerr called time-out for Curry to celebrate his record.

On the night of Stephen Curry’s fourth NBA championship in Boston Garden, both his parents were courtside to celebrate a career-defining moment for him.

Stephen Curry was emotional after winning his fourth NBA championship, as he hugged his father while the shot clock was still running and met Sonya Curry shortly after. Both his parents have been cheerleaders of him since day one.

Curry told Graham that his mom was his biggest cheerleader in the arena. Sonya would yell at Steph to guard his matchup.

Sonya Curry accidentally fuelled Stephen Curry’s matchup

One of the greatest moments in Steph’s career was in 2019 when he matched up with younger brother Seth Curry in the Western Conference Finals between Golden State Warriors and Portland Trailblazers. Curry once told Bleacherreport that watching Sonya Curry cheer for him against his brother was weird. In this particular instance, Sonya may have been deliberately fueling Curry’s opponent, who interestingly, was Seth Curry.

Stephen Curry said, “If I wasn’t playing defense the way I supposed to, she’s yelling, ‘what are you doing, guard your man, guard your man.’ So she’s giving away for my opponent whoever I’m guarding, she’s giving him fuel because he knows, ‘you know-oh yeah, he’s not guarding me I gotta keep going at him.'”

Curry talked about his Mother, Sonya, always being there for him courtside and shouting at the referee, the opponents, and Steph.

Steph once confused Sonya about cheering for him or his brother

In 2019, during the Trailblazers series, Dell and Sonya sat courtside, and each wore a jersey for their sons. This was decided by a pre-game coin flip. A few years later, Stephen played Philadelphia 76ers and cooked Seth Curry.

Seth Curry got his ankles broken by Steph, who proceeded to shoot a dagger three-pointer. Sonya Curry looked overjoyed until she realized, who was defending her son. Interestingly, in this scenario, she managed to fuel her son Seth Curry’s opponent.
