Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan was an idol both on and off the court. His iconic dunks, shots, and dribble moves still leave fans and viewers in awe. There wasn’t much that he could not do on the basketball court. And Michael’s off-court activities were nothing that could’ve been blown out of the ordinary.

However, there was one thing that Jordan received some bad press on. And it was his infamous gambling habits. The docuseries, ‘The Last Dance’ did cover a shade of Jordan’s gambling habits. And how the media had connected his gambling debts to his father’s mysterious death.

David Stern backing up Michael Jordan

Even the late David Stern once voiced his concern over Jordan’s gambling habits. He sat down in an interview during the 1993 NBA finals where he discussed Jordan’s gambling problems on live TV.

The reporter wanted to talk about how the most prominent figure in the league is often involved in high-stakes gambling. And the way Stern handled the question was quite remarkable. He made sure that portrayed Jordan or any other NBA player in a bad light.

Jordan was often known to gamble big amounts on the golf course. And according to a certain Richard Esquinas, Jordan owed him $1.2 million in gambling debt. He wrote about it in his book, ‘Michael and Me: Our gambling addiction–My cry for help!’

MJ was associated with convicted money launderer Slim Bouler due to his gambling as well. But the NBA and David Stern got a handle on it pretty well. Jordan once had to testify in court after he wrote a check to Slim Bouler for $57,000 due to a bet that he had lost while playing golf.

While talking to the reporter, Stern said, “I’m not about to go about and see how much our players owe. I don’t think they should owe it to the wrong people.”

Jordan and his competitiveness

His Airness was quite competitive both on and off the court. From betting on golf games while playing against former basketball coach Chuck Daly, or him just tossing coins in a cup with his security team before games, Michael Jordan sure was quite competitive.
