Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Dwayne Haskins tragically died on Saturday after being hit by a truck. The former Ohio State University player was only 24. And with tributes pouring in for the passing of the young man, there have been some negative comments going around that irked fans and players, including Damian Lillard.
The quarterback was training in South Florida with other Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers. He was on the highway when he got hit; the reports suggested. Haskins was a standout quarterback at the Ohio State University and he was drafted 15th overall in the 2019 NFL draft. He played his first two seasons at Washington before being signed by the Steelers as the third-choice quarterback. The organization was devastated to learn about the loss and they issued a statement to support his wife and family.

He was pronounced dead on the scene itself. Several tributes have poured in from around the world from NFL players, NBA players, and celebrities. But one NFL legend decided to mock Hawkins at such a time.

Gil Brandt, is the pioneering Cowboys scout who is best known for helping the Cowboys win their first two Super Bowl teams. And he was on the’s SiriusXM and he make some jokes about Haskins’s death.

The 90-year-old Brandt described Hawkins as “a guy living to be dead,” and he criticized his decision to leave school early and speculated “maybe if he stayed in school a year he wouldn’t do silly things.”

As soon as he said that, the sports community rose in union and called him out for such insensitive comments. NFL legend Shannon Sharpe and NBA superstar Damian Lillard were among the big names who called him out.

Brandt has since apologized for his comments after the backlash. It was highly insensitive for a scout to talk about a player like that. And it was very nice to see the community standing as one at such a time and calling out people who have behaved in such a way. This should serve as a reminder to everyone to not kick a person while he’s down.
