Charles Barkley, who was born in 1963 in Leeds, Alabama, experienced a challenging upbringing that had a significant impact on both his life and career. Charles’ early years were marred by the absence of his father, Frank Barkley, who left the family after divorcing Charles’ mother, Charcey Glenn. Barkley’s mother, however, remarried, giving him a stepfather figure. Unfortunately, when Chuck was just 11 years old, tragedy struck when his stepfather perished in a terrible accident. The challenges he encountered while growing up were made worse by this tragic loss.

Barkley had to traverse a world full of obstacles and limited possibilities while growing up in Leeds. Despite a rocky beginning, Barkley funneled his emotional turmoil into basketball, where he found peace and a sense of direction. Most recently, Charles Barkley opened up about a traumatizing incident that happened while he was in high school, bought on by his father, which turned out to be a major turning point in his life.

Charles Barkley revealed that he hated his father for a long time, as he was never really present. He moved to California, as far as he could from Alabama. However, there was a particular incident with his father that really traumatized him.

His father had flown in from California to see Chuck graduate from high school. However, he couldn’t walk as he flunked Spanish. He was devastated as it is. When his father flew in and added salt to the injury, it disheartened him even more.

Chuck continued, “I was pissed because this dude hadn’t been in my life my entire time. And he makes me feel sh*t.  Like I already feel like sh*t.  He’s like complaining that he flew all the way from California to see me graduate and I dont graduate.  I was already traumatized.”

Chuck continued, “But I stood there on that stadium and watched every uh I think we had 110 people graduate. And I sit there and watch and I cried the whole three hours. That night in my life was like ‘Yo man, you cannot let other people control your life you got to take care of your own life you can’t ever put to give anybody the power to screw you up again’ and that was the first major turning point in my life. Because I was like okay I learned something from this.”

He even held bitter feelings toward his Spanish teacher for 20 years. It wasn’t until he grew up and realized that it was his own fault. On the contrary, his teacher Miss Gomez was one of the kindest people he has met.

Charles Barkley’s father, unfortunately, passed away in December 2021. Chuck was there for him during his final moments and also buried him.
