NBA legend Dennis Rodman is a household name at this point in time. Although much is known about his success and his history in the league, his dark childhood and struggles remain relatively unknown to many fans. Rodman grew up in a family consisting of his mother and two sisters. His father, Philander Rodman had a history of cheating and he left the family when Dennis Rodman was merely a child. Philander’s whereabouts were unknown for many years as he had left the United States of America.

Finally, when Rodman was a player for the Chicago Bulls, Philander gave an interview. He had settled in the Philippines and was living a good life there. During the interview, he touched upon his life in the Philippines and his decision to leave his family. Furthermore, he also revealed his own dark past which has a resemblance to The Worm’s childhood.

Rodman’s father once revealed his own dark past

Philander Rodman, the estranged father of five-time NBA champion Dennis Rodman gave an interview to the Washington Post in the Philippines, his new home. After leaving the United States of America, Philander settled in the Philippines having married two local women.

Apart from answering questions about his world-famous son and other topics, Philander touched upon how he grew up without a father as well.

He said, “I understand Dennis’s bitterness towards me. He left my mother when I was 6 years old and went to Chicago. I used to hate my father. I thought he deserted us.”

Despite his hatred at a young age, Philander related to his father when he had a family of his own. When he met his father in Chicago, Philander confessed his feelings to his father and sympathized with him. 

Dennis Rodman met his father after decades

Rodman, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, and Mitch Richmond played against former top athletes from the Philippine Basketball Association in 2012. The former NBA stars formed the NBA “Alumni” team and the game was held in the Philippines.
