The Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has made a name for himself on the court, establishing himself as a bona fide superstar in the league. In the ongoing season, Tatum is averaging 30.3 points per game and has spearheaded the Boston side to a brilliant 54-24 record in the East, only two games behind the leaders Milwaukee. With abundant talent, the money is bound to come his way. However, despite a net worth of $25 million, as it turns out, the 25-year-old still can’t spend his money without the approval of his mother.

Tatum has bought a $4 million house with a special basketball court for his son, Deuce. In his own way, Deuce is a Celtics star as well, whenever the 5-year-old enters the arena, a loud cheer from fans welcomes him. However, it is Mama Tatum who runs the finances in the house. Although a multi-millionaire, Jayson Tatum isn’t allowed to spend the money without running it by his mother, Brandy Cole.

Tatum’s mother gave birth to him when she was just 18 years of age. Although now the Celtics star has a good relationship with his father, it wasn’t the case in his early years. Brandy Cole raised Tatum as a single mother, working multiple jobs and pursuing her college degree all at the same time. His father, Justin Tatum, contributed to shaping his talented kid as well. Justin’s mantra was to not celebrate small milestones to make his boy work harder.

All that hard work paid off when Tatum was drafted into the NBA in 2017. Since then he has played for the Boston Celtics and has steadily risen to stardom. Now a father himself, Tatum is still his mama’s boy. As revealed in an interview with Graham Bensinger, Tatum still needs his mother’s permission before he spends money.

The mother-son duo made an agreement that Tatum will not spend money that comes in from the Celtics. However, he is free to spend the money he makes from his endorsements. This unique strategy from his mother must be really helpful for the young star to keep his expenses in check. However, that’s still a lot of money to spend for a big star like Jayson Tatum.

Brandy Cole has been the pillar of strength for the 2023 NBA All-Star MVP. She is the reason why Tatum was able to pursue his basketball dream after his teacher told him to go another route.

Brandy Cole warned her son’s teacher

While the Celtics forward was still in first grade, his teacher asked him to change his dreams. After Tatum’s mother found out about it, she went to the school to warn his teacher. A strong believer in her son’s talent and hard work, she was blunt in her response to the teacher who tried to diminish the young kid’s enthusiasm. “Don’t tell him that when I’m at home telling him he could be the president if he wanted to be,” she said, while confronting the teacher for trying to shoot down her son’s dream.
