NBA legend Magic Johnson had a rocky relationship with his wife Earlitha “Cookie” Kelly during his playing years. No doubt about that. Although they were in love with each other, it took them years to commit. Even when they were about to get married, Magic called off the wedding twice.
The Apple TV+ documentary series ‘They Call Me Magic,’ covers very personal events in Magic’s life, including the rifts in his relationship with his wife. In the show, Magic’s sister, Pearl, revealed that she told her brother not to marry Cookie if he was not sure.

She added that she had a conversation with Magic before the wedding and her brother was not sure about the marriage. So she told him not to if he was not sure about it. But Pearl only gave that advice because she did not want his brother to hurt Cookie in the future.
Sister’s honest advice to Magic Johnson
Talking about her advice, Pearl said, “If I’m going to be completely honest, Earvin and I had a conversation, and I don’t know if he remembers this, but he was —- He wasn’t sure. And I had told him..you know what, if you’re not sure, don’t do it. Because I didn’t want him to hurt her.”
Notably, Magic Johnson called off his marriage with Cookie Johnson. Not once, but twice. His future wife was not happy about it. However, the three-time MVP tried to make up for his actions.
In the show, Cookie revealed the grand gesture of her husband when he asked her to marry again. She said that the five-time NBA champ had rented the entire restaurant. Also, he made sure their families were there. Furthermore, she hilariously pointed out that the ring was bigger.
Despite multiple mishaps, the couple finally tied the knot in 1991. Even before their wedding, Cookie has always been with Magic during his ups and downs. But there was a time when he was worried that she might not be with him in the future.
Cookie dating another man shook Magic
Magic Johnson was dating another girl during a part of his college years. While watching a game on TV, Cookie saw the other girl in the stands with Magic’s mother. This crushed her. Later on, Magic would feel something similar. Even though Magic was always on her mind, Cookie started dating another guy, since Magic was dating as well.

But the two continued to talk with each other over the phone. During a call one day, Cookie revealed she can’t speak because the man she was dating was with her. This shook Magic, who realized she won’t just be waiting for him while he is dating others. However, things finally worked out for the couple.
