After Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors, Draymond Green had a few words to say about Golden State’s meltdown during the 4th quarter. After dominating most of the game against the Celtics, they ended up letting the lead slip in the 4th quarter.

“We pretty much dominated the game for the first 41, 42 minutes, so we’ll be fine.” He further stated, “They hit 21 threes and Marcus Smart, Al Horford, and Derrick White combined for 15. Those guys are good shooters, but they combined for what… 15-for-23, from those guys. We’ll be fine.”

The Golden State Warriors lost the first game of the series, thanks to an amazing performance by the Celtics during the 4th quarter.

Draymond got a few things wrong in his analysis of the game. He omits the fact that while Stephen Curry shot six three-pointers during the first quarter, Boston was trailing Golden State by only four points.

Green, by his standards, had an off night as well. The Warriors had scored just 16 points in the entire 4th quarter.

Draymond Green: Confused with ifs and buts

If one sees the actual statistical breakdowns of the threes made by the Celtics, then one can see those were “mostly” open shots. Boston is the most successful three-point shooting team this year. They have made 43.6 shots per game this postseason which is considered “open”, per NBA tracking.

In this game, 59 of Boston’s 85 field-goal attempts were open or wide-open opportunities. This stat also includes 38 of the Celtics’ 41 three-point attempts.

The Celtics scored 73 points off those 59 shots. It meant that they had 1.24 points per shot, which did exceed expected percentages. The Boston defense too gave fewer wide-open looks to Golden State. They created 12 fewer open or wide-open shots than the Celtics. They scored 56 points from those shots. The Warriors had 1.19 points per open or wide-open shot, which is lower than the 1.21 points they had throughout the playoffs.

This included 10 of their 16 playoff games being against the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks. Both of these teams’ defenses were ranked ninth and dead last among all the 16 playoff teams, respectively. This just shows that Boston’s defense is elite and that their roster is filled with great shooters.

Surprisingly, Jayson Tatum also had an off night. He was 3 off 17 from the field, which is uncharacteristic of him. In these playoffs, he has mostly backed his off nights with a huge performance. The Warriors and Green would need to be prepared for him going into Game 2.
