Gabrielle Union uses her voice for a fight

Apart from her ventures as an actress in Hollywood, Gabrielle Union has done her fair share of activism. She is a fervent supporter of racial and gender equality, and as an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, Union actively campaigns against prejudice and fosters inclusion. She also supports programs that work to enhance education and give power to youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Her most recent campaign was however to battle a dominant issue in Hollywood.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is a powerful labor union that has proudly represented thousands of gifted writers. These writers work on scripted series, features and news programs among other types of material. WGA has long and consistently fought for its members’ rights, welfare and creative freedom. In a major shift for the entertainment industry, however, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the WGA were unable to come to a mutually acceptable agreement over a new contract.

The negotiations’ main goal was to create better and enduring working circumstances for the guild’s distinguished members. After reaching a stalemate, the WGA made a daring move on May 2. They called for a broad strike that included TV and film writers nationwide – and who better to tune in for the campaign with activism in her blood and roots in Hollywood but Gabrielle Union?

According to writer Caroline Renard’s tweet, Union played a prominent role in supporting the writers of Hollywood with their campaign. Belonging to a POC community herself, she was instrumental in supporting African writers and directors.

Gabrielle Union quote-tweeted the writer’s tweet with the caption, “Why we do what we do, the fight continues”.

Since May 1st, more than 11,000 writers for film and television have been on strike. As a result, production on a number of high-profile projects has been halted. The production of the eagerly awaited Season 2 of Severance and the concluding season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things will have to wait, for instance.
