“Elvis Deserved Better”: Despite Not Being a Fan, Tom Hanks Special Taken to the Cleaners By Mourning Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is also a very respected media personality. Over the years, the Los Angeles Lakers legend has always been vocal about social issues persistent in the country. At 75, the six-time NBA champion does not make many media appearances as he did a few years back. However, he puts his message across, one way or another. While talking about the recent controversies surrounding Twitter recently, Abdul-Jabbar noted that he uses social media as a tool to reach fans quickly.

Furthermore, the six-time NBA MVP also uses his website, Kareem Substack, to share his views about a lot of things. Given his experience in Hollywood, he also gives his take on movies. He recently shared his honest and brutal opinion about the box office hit Avatar: The Way of Water. Now, he has shared his list of bad movies from 2022.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Elvis

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is not happy about some of the movies that are nominated for the Best Picture Oscar award. He stated that four of the most disappointing movies of 2022 are nominated including, Elvis. It is the biopic of rock and roll legend Elvis Presley that was released in June last year. It was a commercial success grossing a reported $287 million worldwide. However, Abdul-Jabbar was not impressed and not happy with its nomination. The legendary center noted that he is not a fan of most biopics of musicians because of their rigid formula and predictability.

He then stated that telling the story from the point of view of Elvis’s corrupt manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks, was a creative mistake. Abdul- Jabbar then wrote on his website, “Elvis deserved better.” He then added, “I mourn an enormous talent lost too soon (he was 42). I also mourn that his story wasn’t told better.”

Despite his criticism of the movie, he noted Hanks is a great actor and also lauded the performance of Austin Butler. Butler recently won the BAFTA award for Leading Actor. Abdul- Jabbar also added that the only good thing about the movie was its lively music which helps the audience sit through.

Abdul-Jabbar’s list of good and bad movies from 2022

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also listed Avatar: The Way of Water in the list of disappointing movies that made the Oscar nominations. Not surprising after his comments when the movie was released. Other than Elvis, and Avatar, the list also included Tar and The Fablemans.

On the other hand, the 19-time NBA All-Star also shared his list of best movies from 2022. The list includes Everything Everywhere All at Once, Banshees of Inisherin, Women Talking, and She Said.
