Over the past 10 games, Anthony Davis has looked unstoppable. The Los Angeles Lakers center recently finished a stellar week. Moreover, he won his first Player of the Week honor. His emergence back into being dominant on the court was arguably the biggest reason the purple and gold managed to get back into the season. Unfortunately, old problems seem to be creeping back once again. Notably, just 8 minutes into the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, AD took the walk back to the locker room with flu-like symptoms. Unable to return for the entire game, fans could only wish the eight-time All-Star pulled off a Michael Jordan-like feat.

In 1997, the Chicago Bulls were in a heated battle with arch-rivals, the Utah Jazz. The franchise was eyeing a fifth title in the Jordan era. ‘His Airness’ was the heart and soul of the dynasty for the Bulls. However, just before Game 5, MJ went on to feel flu-like symptoms. While it was food poisoning that caused the problem, the NBA great was possibly in no state to play the game. But there was no quit in the competitive fire of Michael Jordan. In one of his most iconic performances, he led the Bulls with 38 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block in the game. His performance goes down in NBA history as the ‘flu game’.

Unfortunately, the feat isn’t one any player can battle with. Evidently, Anthony Davis battled similar symptoms recently before suiting up against the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, all he could manage was a few minutes before calling it a night.

Fans share their thoughts after Davis misses out on Lakers’ latest defeat

Davis has been on a hot streak since the beginning of November. Over the last 10 games, the ‘Brow’ looked like his former New Orleans Pelicans self, averaging 31.9 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, In addition, just a game prior, AD went on an onslaught against the Washington Wizards, in a 55-point outing. However, the tough road schedule seems to have gotten to him. While Anthony Davis was able to make it to the court for the Los Angeles Lakers, it would be shortlived.

In his version of the ‘flu game’, the Lakers center would march on for just 8 minutes. He could only contribute just 1 point during his brief stay on the floor. NBA fans were left upset and even threw their criticism toward Davis for his underwhelming performance.

Without their most ferocious offensive force, the 17-time champions crumbled under the Cleveland crowd. In his return back to his home, LeBron James led the Lakers with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 assists. Russell Westbrook continued to impress off the bench with 16 points and 2 blocks. Thomas Bryant was able to provide an AD-like spark to the offense going off for a season-high 19 points off the bench.

However, in front of the crafty heroics of Donovan Mitchell, the ‘Showtime’ Lakers would lose their hold on the game in the fourth quarter. In a battle that was all square at 92-92, the former Jazz All-Star took over to power the Cavs through. Mitchell ended with a game-high 43 points to go with his 5 assists and 4 steals.

While Anthony Davis didn’t check back in, his resolve probably shouldn’t be doubted. It might not have been as colorful as Michael Jordan’s 1997 electrifying show, but it’s the effort that possibly counts.
