The NBA world has always been at the forefront whenever a serious matter needs awareness. Many players have used their influence and privileges in order to support important social issues. But this time it concerns a very sinister yet important topic – the constitutional rights of women. LeBron James and Kyrie Irving have come out in support of the women of the United States following the overturning of the Roe vs Wade verdict.
As per the verdict, abortion no longer exists as a constitutional right for women. The decision has taken center stage as people all over the country can be seen protesting against its grotesqueness. Most people think that is going to set the country backwards. The NBA stars have gone on their social media and supported the “majority” public opinion on the matter.

While Kyrie Irving used the f word to express his discontent, LeBron James had to go all caps to show his anger. The embarrassment following the verdict was real and clear as per Josh Hart. Ja Morant could be seen sharing the same disappointment. All three Simons, Jaren and Tyrese, like millions of people, felt that this was a big step backwards for the government to take. Crowder was also sad and angry with the decision. Just goes to show that NBA stars are just people who can only do so much, when something of this gravity hits the country.
NBA and WNBA issue a joint statement after the Roe vs Wade overturning
The Roe v. Wade overturning on Friday brought about the dismay of many American citizens. Taking away the constitutional rights of a specific gender and control of their bodies came as a shock to women and men alike, not just in the US but across the world. States can now implement their own abortion laws. Previously, abortions were permitted during the first two trimesters of pregnancy. The verdict only means that women have much less of their right to their own health and future. Following the verdict, The NBA and WNBA issued a joint statement on their Instagram.

The case goes back to 1973. However, it has carried on to be the dismay of people with the uncertainty of its decision. And even after this decision, there is possibility that the Supreme Court would face abortion cases, particularly if some states go on to implement total abortion bans, with no exceptions for rape, incest or for the mother’s health.
The support from NBA stars among other athletes shows how regressive this decision is and hopefully this outrage would help garner support for women in need of help now that they’ve been stripped off of their basic right.
