The devastating news of WNBA star Brittney Griner receiving a 9-year sentence has not settled in yet. Many people around the world have shown their disappointment in the news. Also, people are showing compassion for the situation Griner has found herself in at the moment. Being detained in a foreign nation is one of the worst things that could happen to anyone. However, not everyone is empathetic to the two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner.

Recently, Florida Republican, Lavern Spicer made a controversial statement regarding Griner on social media. Fans couldn’t get over the fact that an African American woman could comment something like this. On the other hand, there are people who are supporting Spicer’s stance. Also, this is not the first time Spicer has made a controversial statement. In 2021, Kyrie Irving was not allowed to play a lot of regular season games because he was not vaccinated.

And Spicer compared it with Magic Johnson’s HIV situation. She argued that if Magic Johnson was allowed to play with HIV, Irving should be allowed to play without getting vaccinated as well. And the fans ridiculed Spicer for comparing HIV to an airborne disease like Covid-19.

Brittney Griner about the national anthem

The Republican’s comments about Griner hating the country are due to the WNBA star’s take on the national anthem. In 2020, there were country-wide protests against the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. And the players of Phoenix Mercury and Los Angeles Sparks walked off the court in protest before the national anthem was played.

Brittney Griner said, “I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season. I think we should take that much of a stand. I?m going to protest regardless. I?m not going to be out there for the national anthem. If the league continues to want to play it, that?s fine. It will be all season long, I?ll not be out there. I feel like more are going to probably do the same thing. I can only speak for myself.”

And this has been time and again reminded by a lot of people at the moment.
