NBA legend Michael Jordan would not have become the household name that he is today or have his $2.4 billion-net worth without the phenomenal Nike deal. The man behind the deal Sonny Vaccaro, though, has not gotten too much credit. The sports marketing executive also worked with Adidas and attempted to sign Lakers superstar LeBron James after Jordan’s success.

Vaccaro had quite a disruptive tenure with Adidas after his departure from Nike, often finding himself in turbulent circumstances. Remarkably, he was investigated for corporate espionage during his tenure at Nike.

The lie LeBron James was told led to an unfavorable deal

Sonny Vaccaro signed His Airness before his first-ever game with the Chicago Bulls, consequently earning both Jordan and Nike billions of dollars and revolutionizing the sneaker industry. It still did not earn him any favors at the brand, however. The executive dove into the details of him being pushed out of Nike in a recent interview with Vanity Fair following the release of the movie Air based on the origin of the iconic deal.

Vaccaro also opened up about his exit from Adidas, revealing that the primary reason was the LeBron James deal. The executive revealed how Adidas lied to him about the King’s $100 million contract. The company wanted to sign James but only give him 70 million dollars with the rest being given in the form of incentives. To this Sonny Vaccaro revealed he said, “My idea is, give all the money now. If you’re scared [and offering] incentives, don’t give the damn deal.”

He explained that his professional relationships are more than business for him. He had given his word to James and his mother, Gloria, and therefore when he opened the contract Adidas had drawn up, he felt betrayed.

Nike pushed out Sonny Vaccaro

In the interview, Vaccaro also talked about Nike minimalizing his role in the Jordan deal over the years and the documentary The Last Dance being proof of it. The movie Air on the other hand addresses Vaccaro’s role deeply, where he is portrayed by Matt Damon, and showcases him in a positive light.

The movie has also led to recent revelations about how it was Jordan’s mother who convinced him to meet and sign with Nike. This would not have been possible without Vaccaro building a rapport with Deloris Jordan.
