Salley’s debut acting part was quite comparable to his playing career; short role but of pivotal significance. While explaining how he ended up in the “Bad Boys” series, he mentioned how he upset Martin Lawrence with his comments about his fiance and prenuptial agreement.

Salley said, “What happened is, I’m friends with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. I was with Martin though. Martin was upset with me because I just met his new fiance and the first thing I said when I saw her was ‘Oh she’s fine!’ He said ‘I know.’ I said ‘you got a prenup?’ And he was pissed.”

When asked that did he say all that in front of Martin Lawrence’s fiance, Salley added “Exactly what he (Martin) said! I don’t understand what the problem is. I’m talking about her. I didn’t understand that it was a bad thing. I wanted her to know I’m thinking out and looking out for my boy.”

Salley then went on to explain how upset Martin was. He thought that Salley had disrespected him in front of his girlfriend, to which he responded that he did not intend to be disrespectful and agreed to apologize to Martin’s fiance.

John Salley did not confirm whether or not he apologized to her. However, from a distance and based on Salley’s explanation, it appeared like Martin Lawrence did not take it to heart. It definitely didn’t interfere with their professional relationship because both celebrities embraced their roles in the film and helped it become a blockbuster hit.
