Brittney Griner from the WNBA was one of the most controversial players last year. WNBA star Brittney Griner was in a lot of headlines last year due to her detainment in Russia. From sleep deprivation to freezing conditions, the 32-year-old had a horrid time in prison. Although Griner safely returned to the USA a few months ago, she won’t easily forget her suffering in Russia. However, the eight-time WNBA All-Star wasn’t alone in her fight and she recently revealed what helped her have hope despite the troubles.

The famous #WeAreBG campaign was one of the main reasons that motivated the government to bring the 2014 WNBA champion back home. Reflecting on her time back in prison, BG shared how the continuous support helped her feel comfortable.

The center was sentenced to nine years in prison after she was caught in possession of medical cannabis, which is illegal in Russia. However, after several negotiations, the government successfully brought Griner back home through a prisoner exchange. Though the 6’9 star is back on the court with a fresh cut, her time in prison was nothing less than horrifying.

Finally breaking the silence on her detainment, BG mentioned, “Those times where I was able to see what was going on, it definitely made me a little more comfortable. It made me have hope, which is really a hard thing to have. A really dangerous thing to have because when it doesn’t work it’s so crushing“. However, the veteran center is thankful for the love from her fellow Americans.
