It has only been days since Ja Morant took center stage for a wrong reason once again. The 23-year-old guard landed in his second firearm controversy of the year after he flashed a firearm during an Instagram live session. The Memphis Grizzlies have apparently suspended Morant from team activities. Alarmed by the youngster’s conduct, quite a lot of legends have given heartfelt advice to him.

Earlier, ex-NBA star Stephen Jackson, who had once landed in trouble for a firearm incident, had extended support to Ja Morant. Now yet another former NBA star with a similar controversial history, has asked Morant to choose his friends wisely.

Former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas has been commenting on all relevant matters pertaining to the NBA. On an episode of his own podcast, the veteran had given his two cents on the latest controversy surrounding Ja Morant. In his recent appearance on The Old Man and the Three podcast, Arenas has once again touched up on Ja Morant and his latest controversy. In the episode, host J.J Redick asked Arenas what advice he has got for Morant.

Gilbert Arenas started his response by saying that a 23-year-old youngster like Ja Morant is likely not to take his advice. Nonetheless, Arenas did not shy away from advising the Grizzlies star. “The advice is, understand your surroundings. Put people around you who have the same interest. And that interest is protecting your brand. Even if it is not your interest, make it theirs. So you need people around you that’s willing to tell you no,” said Arenas. Arenas also cited LeBron James’ example of benefitting from surrounding himself with the right people.

How Gilbert Arenas landed in a firearm controversy

Back in 2009, during his days with Wizards, Gilbert Arenas had reportedly admitted that he bought unloaded guns to the Capital One Arena. By doing so, the 3x-NBA All-Star had violated both NBA norms and Washington D.C norms. Besides, in January 2010, it was also reported that Arenas and his then teammate Javaris Crittenton had drawn guns in the locker room after an argument. Later in the same month, Arenas had again violated D.C laws by carrying an unlicensed pistol.

These back-to-back firearm incidents and the subsequent penalties forced Arenas to miss out most of the 2009-10 NBA season. Having learnt a lesson the hard way, Arenas is truly concerned about Morant landing in similar troubles. Apparently, even after assuming that Morant won’t take his advice, the veteran couldn’t help but offer some wise words.
