After two weeks of speculation about Brittney Griner and her location, there is finally some clarity. As per the latest reports, the WNBA superstar is being transferred to a penal colony in the Russian region of Mordovia.

A letter by a former prisoner turned activist Nadia Tolokonnikova in 2013 involved some details about the penal colony. Some of them include being made to work 16 to 17 hours a day with one day off every eight weeks.

Moreover, a former inmate revealed women take extreme measures in order to escape serving time in Mordovia. According to her, “When the girls find out that they’re going to Mordovia, they cut their wrists, do everything possible: get sick, swallow nails, just so they don’t have to go there. Its reputation is known, especially after the letter by Nadia Tolokonnikova.

Former Marine Paul Whelan is also housed in a penal colony in Mordovia. He has been in the news for quite some time following Griner’s arrest. In case the officials reach an agreement to do a prisoner swap deal, Griner and Whelan would be handed the chance to go back to the United States of America.

Officials confirm being aware of Griner’s location

Officials started Griner’s transfer process on the 4th of November amidst widespread support for the jailed WNBA star. When asked about the case, an official confirmed they are aware of BG’s location.

We are aware of reports of her location, and in frequent contact with Ms. Griner’s legal team“, said a US State Department spokesperson. Prior to this massive update, Griner’s family and her legal team were kept in the dark regarding her location.
