“Get Your Sleep, Because Tomorrow I’m Gonna Bust Your A**”: Celtics Legend Larry Bird Once Gave a Brutal Warning to Future ROTY Before the Dream Team’s First Scrimmage

The ‘Dream Team’ is considered to be the greatest accumulation of basketball talent ever assembled. The team was led by veterans Magic Johnson and Larry Bird while Michael Jordan was the best player on the roster. They dominated every opponent on their way to an Olympic gold medal. However, the first team they faced was full of young, budding college players.

The best players from various colleges were called in to face the Dream Team for their first scrimmage. Future All-Stars Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, and Allan Houston were part of the team dubbed the ‘College All-Stars’. Webber, who won the Rookie of the Year award in 1994, was given a stern warning by Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird before the game.

Webber stated in an interview what Bird had said to him. He said, “I rode from the airport in a limo with Larry Bird, and that was such an honor. We talked about playing against the Pistons, different moves, all this stuff. He was just a great dude“.
He continued, “Then, as we got out of the car and I was getting my bags, he goes, ‘Make sure you get your sleep, because tomorrow I’m gonna bust your a**, and you’re going to remember it the rest of the week.'”

All the college players had their jaws on the floor after seeing the legends practice for the first time. It was a surreal moment for them and one they would never forget. However, what followed was even more unbelievable. The young guys managed to actually beat the Dream Team in their first scrimmage.
The young kids gave the Dream Team a wake-up call
While no one expected the ‘College All-Stars’ to be competitive, their victory served as a wake-up call for the legends. Consequently, the next day, the Dream Team didn’t let them score a single point. They completely overwhelmed the young guys and gave them a reality check.
