Superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has had a stellar start to the new NBA season. As always, he has been dominant on both ends of the court so far. However, Toronto Raptors forward, O.G. Anunoby is unfazed by this. With an average of 2.9 steals and 6.3 rebounds per game this season, Anunoby made a bold claim in a recent press conference that has left fans in a series of debates. The Toronto Raptors drafted him in 2017 and he has been consistently improving over the years.

The defensive side of the game has been one of the strong suits of Anunoby who takes pride in it. After winning the title in 2019, he now has his eyes set on the Defensive Player of the Year award.

NBA fans started naming their defensive favorites as the best defenders in the league. They also reminded the world that the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo still exist. However, some fans were also in support of Anunoby’s claim.

While some fans supported Anunoby, many felt Giannis is the best defender in the league. However, Anunoby is still one of the best on-ball defenders in the league. And in this season so far, his numbers are great as well, as he leads the league in steals.

O.G. Anunoby, the anchor of Toronto’s defense

The Toronto Raptors have most often than not had strong defensive displays. This season is not any different. 25-year-old forward, O.G. Anunoby plays a vital role in the defensive core of the team.

In the game against the San Antonio Spurs, Anunoby mounted 5 steals to his name. Also, in the game against Trae Young’s Atlanta Hawks, he had 6 steals. A glance at his stats will show that Anunoby is DPOY material. But in five years, injuries and his general health have held him back from getting a good run of games.

His coach Nick Nurse stated Anunoby looks like he has got his rhythm back. He believes that this could be because of getting fitter. He said, “It is noticeable how quick he is to the ball, out of gaps, in gaps, swiping at the ball.” Having said that, his teammate Pascal Siakam is confident that with the ability and skill Anunoby possess, he can be the DPOY soon enough.

However, with the likes of Giannis, Marcus Smart, and others, Anunoby has a huge task at hand.
