Sergio Garcia once wiped the floor with arguably the greatest player of all-time in the sport of basketball, Michael Jordan. Not many can boast a similar outcome against ‘His Airness’. But the pro golfer took Michael Jordan to task almost effortlessly, this 1999 photo shows.
Michael Jordan is often dubbed as the greatest athlete of all time. His spectacular athletic gifts, along with his mental fortitude, intense work ethic, and sharp basketball acumen, brought him five league MVPs, six Finals MVPs, and six NBA championships. But above all, the thing that gave Michael an edge over everyone else was his insatiable competitive spirit.

In fact, Jordan loved to compete with everybody in everything. As a result, very few people could get the better of Jordan on the court and outside. Therefore, this picture derives its value from the rarity of the occasion it depicts. The rare sight of somebody not only beating Michael Jordan but doing so quite easily and taking great pleasure in it.
Michael Jordan chases Sergio Garcia in a rare picture
This rare photo, taken in 1999 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews, shows Michael Jordan chasing Sergio Garcia in the old course of the tournament. Garcia is almost taunting Jordan with his arms flailing on both sides like a make-believe airplane.

Jordan seemed to enjoy the occasion as well. At the same time, he’s trying his best to catch Garcia and win in this little game of cat and mouse.

Garcia seems pretty indifferent to the fact that he’s going against the great Michael Jordan. The man who is famous for destroying every challenger in his path to get what he wants. Nevertheless, the former world number 2 is no doubt enjoying his time giving Jordan a taste of his own medicine.

The Alfred Dunhill cup takes place at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland every year during fall. The picture taken by David Cannon of Getty Images captures Michael Jordan in his mid-30s and Sergio Garcia in his late teens. The Spanish ‘teen dream’ is definitely utilizing his youth to best the ageing ‘GOAT’.

However, Jordan is by no means decrepit and incapable of competition. In fact, he had just completed the second three-peat with the Bulls the previous year in 1998. So it’s fair game to Garcia.

As a matter of fact, 1999 will also be the year the 42-year-old golfer would enter into a prolonged feud with the legendary Tiger Woods.
