History was made when Democratic State Attorney General Maura Healey won the race for governor of Massachusetts. It is also probable that fans are familiar with her for her contributions to basketball. 

Geoff Diehl, a Republican previously elected to the state legislature, suffered a heavy defeat. Former President Donald Trump had endorsed him. With her win in the recent midterm elections, Healey becomes the first openly lesbian governor in the nation.

In addition, she is the first woman to win and be elected to public office in the state. In terms of her relationship with basketball, she is the former co-captain of the Harvard women’s basketball team. As a basketball player in the past, she also played professionally overseas before returning to the US to become a politician.

A lawyer for eight years, she served as Attorney General during her political career. As soon as this news was released, social media was flooded with excitement and happiness. 

Healey was not the only openly lesbian candidate running for this position; Democrat Tina Kotek was also a candidate in the election.

“To those who voted for me and to those who didn’t I want you to know that I’ll be a governor for everyone, and I’ll work with anyone who’s up for making a difference in this state,” Governor Healey said. She not only inspired people but also motivated them to follow their dreams. Either through her political career or through her basketball career, she has been a role model. For many people, she is an inspiration.

“Tonight I want to say something to every little girl and every young LGBTQ person out there. I hope tonight shows you that you can be whatever, whoever you want to be,” she added.

Her journey from a basketball court to becoming Massachusetts governor was not easy. Her history-making accomplishments have inspired many women to pursue careers in politics and help the country.

As a player for the Crimson under Kathy Delaney-Smith from 1988-1992, she was one of the top players in the league. During the 1990-91 season, Harvard won the Ivy League championship with Healey playing an important role.

It was during that time that she was considered to be one of the best league point guards. She became co-captain following that victory in 1991-92.
