Today, many athletes leverage their platform to give back to their communities and raise awareness on plaguing issues. Leading this charge of activism and philanthropy in the NBA is 4x NBA champion, Stephen Curry. Incidentally, Curry’s humanitarian efforts align with another prominent activist, Greta Thunberg.

Ever since her iconic speech at the United Nations Climate Summit in 2019, Greta Thunberg has risen in prominence across all mediums. However, Thunberg’s activism stretches beyond the horizons of climate change. The Swedish 19-year old is also an advocate for mental health. Thunberg discussed her views on activism and mental health in her book series featuring modern world leaders that came out in 2020. Incidentally, Stephen Curry also appeared in the series alongside late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, lawyer Bryan Stevenson, famed feminist Gloria Steinem and iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Stephen Curry’s mental health and philanthropic initiatives
Similarly, over the years, Curry has grown his profile as an activist and taken several initiatives to solve humanitarian problems. In 2018, the Golden State Warriors point guard was featured in the NBA’s official healthcare partner, Kaiser Permanente ad. In the ad, Curry harps on crucial moments from his life and career. The ad ends with the message, “Train the mind. The body will follow.” The 2x MVP continues to work with Kaiser Permanente to raise awareness of mental health and its impact on performance in sports.

Apart from mental health advocacy, Curry has also taken on several philanthropic initiatives. Alongside his wife, Ayesha Curry, the reigning Finals MVP launched the Eat. Learn. Play foundation in 2019. The foundation focuses on raising the standards of education and welfare for children in local communities around Oakland. Moreover, the foundation also focuses on developing solutions to tackle the problems of hunger and education. The couple has emphasized solving problems locally and then transitioning to other geographies.
